Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Speechless

We have a 3 year old who comes in to the gym child care where I work.  We have always had problems with him keeping his hands to himself and he will shove the little ones or take toys from others.  He even walked in one day and immediately ripped Sophie out of CJ's mouth!

Today we heard crying in the back room so I went to check it out - he had an 18 month old pinned against a wall and had his hands wrapped around her neck!!  I immediately ordered him away from her and picked her up.  I went to get his mother, told her what happened and her reaction was to say "Oh... I'll talk to him" while she rolled her eyes!  She came in and told him to have nice hands and if he does it again he will go to his room.  Um... for realz???  I'm appalled! How is this ok???

  • How is this child still allowed at the gym child care?

  • WOW. Well, it's that kind of a response that probably got him to the point he's at, IMO.

    That's really sad, though!

This exactly? Is there any way you can kick him out?

Because keeping members is the primary goal.  I told my 'boss'/friend that she needs to talk to management and have them advise.  If it were up to me he would be gone.

OMG.  They are setting themselves up for a ginormous lawsuit if another child is seriously injured by the kid.

Obviously keeping members is the goal, but that child (and his mother's inaction) is a liability.

What's worse? Losing one member (the mother) or losing a lot of members because their children are being bullied?

(no snark intended, sorry if I came off that way)

  • What is the "back room"?  Is it an unsupervised area?

Just curious...I reliaze you probably didn't go into every detail about the set-up of the gym or its child care area.

Dictated by the same bossman who said I was "Too pregnant to work anymore".  I don't think he considers the possibility of lawsuits... just looks at the bottom line and budget.  Not the brightest bulb in the box.  That's why I told my 'boss' to talk to him - that way her six is covered.

It's not unsupervised, but there are two rooms that are separated from the main room by walls.  We will wander between those and the main room and the outside to keep an eye on everyone.  Normally I will follow this kid around, but I was tending to someone else at the time that this happened.

There are tons of issues with this family that I didn't even get into.  Like I said, if it were up to me they would be gone... but unfortunately I don't make the rules.  I even asked why they are going to wait until it happens again and how seriously he has to hurt a child to get some action.  I think I might ask to fill out an incident report so that it is on record that we took action so we are covered the next time it happens.

  • OMG! That kid sounds scary! If I were the mom of that little girl, i would demand he be banned or I would be canceling my membership and refuse to pay fees for doing so.

I think you're right to fill out an incident report, and definitely note the parent's response. We had a kid like this in my Sunday School class. He was VERY physical - slapping teachers, kicking and punching other kids (in front of the parents) and all his parents would say is "No-no!" One day, he cold-cocked the 70 year old lady who worked with me. So I sat down in a rocker and held him until they got his parents. I told my director that the boy made the classroom unsafe for the other kids (they were noticeably freaked out by him) and I would sit with him like that every Sunday as long as they kept dropping him off. He might be a kid, but my job was to make sure my classroom was a safe place. They addressed it, the parents took it seriously, and even though he eventually moved out of my class (we teach by age group) he appears to be doing fine.

How is that snarky? It makes total sense. They may keep that hellion's mother as a member, but they will wind up either losing other members because the safety of their children is being compromised or getting sued because that kid will do some actual damage. The mother of the child being hurt should also have been advised just so she knows that her kid is hurt. If someone hurt C and the child care service did not tell me, neither I nor my child would patronize that place again.

  • I just found out that the dumba55 GM said there is no need to fill out an incident report.  Really?  I think I will write something up and the three of us who were there will sign it and keep it on file.
