Babies: 3 - 6 Months

From infant carrier to convertible car seat!?

DS will be 6 months old and he is a big boy....at 4.5 months he weighed 16lbs 15oz so I know he is probably super close to 20 pounds at this point.  My question is (I plan asking at his 6 month appt in 2 weeks but thought I'd ask here too) does anyone know the rules/laws on when they can go into a convertible seat? Obviously I know it has to be rearfacing but it is getting to be a huge hassle carrying him in the infant carrier and then if we just get him out of it and carry him into a store it is still kind of a pain b/c of the way the infant carriers are laid down.  Not only that, I think he'd love to ride sitting up so much better.  He always tries so hard to pull himself up and forward while buckled in the infant carrier so I think he'd love sitting up even if he is rearfacing.  Also...I really want a Britax but DH isn't too thrilled on the prices of them (still working on convincing him) :) but what other brands have just as good ratings but for a lesser price??? Thanks so much ladies!!!

  • it depends on your seat, what is its weight minimum. We are swtiching once he can sit up fully.

This. Also, your LO will still be reclined. If there are multiple recline options on the seat (I believe with Britax there are), then your LO still needs to be in the farthest reclining option.

  • You can put a newborn in some convertible seats. Just research the weight minimums on the brands you're interested in.

  • I know that infant carriers are considered no longer "safe" when their feet begin to hit the backseat of your car out past the carrier.  I have a friend with a big guy too, and they only made it to about 9 months in the infant carrier before he was outgrowing it.

  • Im changing my LO in the next week over because he is so long that his feet are almost hanging out of his carrier. I wasnt aware that they had to sit up on their on yet...Huh?

  • Why not just leave the infant seat in the car and take LO in/out just like you would with a convertible carseat? At least until you can convince DH to get a Britax!! :) This is from the Britax website "Many convertible car seats allow you to begin using them when your baby weighs as little as five pounds. That coupled with the fact that these seats can be used rear facing means that you could start using a convertible car seat from day one; you are not required to use an infant car seat." If it helps, I have a Britax Marathon from DD1 (I think) and its minimum weight is 5lbs!

They don't have to be able to sit up on their own. As PP mentioned, some brands are approved for use in babies as small as 5 lbs.

  • We haven't switched yet either.  DS is about 17 lbs and 27" so we still have some time left for his infant seat.  I've also heard great things about Britax from my friends.  One friend got last year's color on sale...I think it was albeebaby. You can definitely find sales.

I moved Kate to a convertible around 5 months. She was big (not huge) but so unhappy in the car. The weight limit on ours (Britax Marathon) was 5 pounds, so she was fine.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

Yeah I checked the website for the car seat and it said min- 5lbs so I figured it was ok.

  • Most convertible seats start low - and can usually be used with a newborn. Just check the minimum weight.

All seats meet the same basic requirements. What you pay for is the bells and whistles. The best seat is going to be the one you are comfortable using, which fits in your car. We didn't buy Britax seats - we have Eddie Bauer all in ones - and they've worked very well for DD.
