2nd Trimester

Dr. Appt today & my weight gain!

My WORD!  I have gained 10 pounds in the last 4 weeks! I weighed myself this morning so I would know what to expect at my appt this afternoon and in all, I have gained 25 pounds!?!  That was my goal of what not to exceed from the start. I really thought I was watching it, eating healthy - carrots, fruit, etc.  Maybe I'm eating too many carbs?  I'm afraid of what my doctor will say this afternoon - probably nothing, but I really don't want to gain but ten more!  Is that even possible?  I definitely don't want to go over 40 pounds.  Sheesh...time to cut it back a bit!

  • Oh, and I started out at an 'average' weight...trust me, I was not UNDERWEIGHT when this first started! :0

  • I had my appointment yesterday and I had gained another 4lbs which has brought my weight gain to 13lbs in less than 4 months!  I am kind of freaking out too.. I lost 60lbs prior to getting pregnant and freaking out that I will be a whale by November at this rate.  I have thought I was eating well but I think it is time to start watching things a little more closely.  My doctor hasn't said anything about my weight gain but I think that is because I always beat him to the punch.. ha ha ha..  I just keep telling myself that I need to eat right and accept that weight gain is part of pregnancy and that I need to MOVE a little more and get a little light exercise back in my routine.

So as much as I would like to say don't worry about the weight gain I can't because that would make me a hipocrate! :-)

  • I'm sure everyone is different. I've read about women who gain 50-60 pounds total and have no problem losing it. If you're eating healthy and gaining weight on good foods, I wouldn't worry about it. My OB said I could gain 35-40 and have also already gained 25. But I'm eating right so she's not worried about it. It's all in my belly too so I'm not worried about it either.

Just don't not eat anymore bc you feel like you're gaining too much, lol. Everyone's different so you can't really compare. Just know you're not the only one Smile

Try not to stress. While you might feel like you've gained too much already, everyone's weight gain is different. The most important thing (esp. when you're concerned about weight) is too make sure you are eating a balanced diet and limiting junk foods and drinks. Also, try to get some light exercise throughout the day...take the stairs instead of the elevator, take a brisk walk after work, etc.

  • I know how you feel.  I had gained 12 pounds by week 16!  I will be weighed again next week at my 24-week appt.  I've been trying to watch my portion sizes and eat snacks every few hours to keep my metabolism up, as well as do the elliptical for about 30-40 minutes 4 days a week.  My doc wasn't concerned at all at my last appointment- I was the one concerned!

One thing to remember is that you aren't gaining all fat- lots of the weight is water retention, extra blood, and a bunch of other things.  Sometimes you can eat super healthy and still gain a lot of weight- every body is different.  That's what I keep telling myself anyway!

I'm probably on the 40 pound train with you- and my goal was about 30.  You aren't alone!  Good luck- just keep reminding yourself that some weight gain is good and necessary for your baby!!

  • Try not to worry too much.  Just look at what you're eating a little more closely like you said and try to incorporate at least 30 mins of exercise 3-5 times a week if you can.  I gained 40-45 lbs with my DS and I was determined not to "eat for two" this time around.  So far I've gained 10 lbs and hope I can stay on the 20-30 lb weight gain track. At my 16 week appt, I had gained 10lbs between 12-16 weeks.  I kind of freaked out b/c with DS, I gained very evenly the whole time (4lbs each month after the 1st tri.) But at my 20 week appt this week, I hadn't gained anything.  In fact, I had lost 1lb.  My dr. isn't worried b/c I am eating healthy and the baby is just fine.  But it does even out at a certain point.  Just make sure you are eating well, doing moderate exercise (I just started up again after my 16 week appt b/c I was starting to feel ok) and try not to stress about the number on the scale.  The baby is doing what it needs to do and there really isn't anything you can do about it until after the baby is born.  If you are controlling everything you can, just try to relax.  Weight is just a number.

  • Don't worry, with my first I gained 50 and my dr kept telling me that I was going to need a c-section because of the weight gain. She was totally wrong, all was fine, and I ended up losing 60 lbs after she was born.

I also heard the other day Kelly Ripa gained 70 lbs with all 3! Smile

  • I am 26 weeks along, and since my first OB apt, I have lost a total of 11 pounds. My OB isnt worried about though because I was not a small girl to begin with (size 12 jeans). I've had TERRIBLE morning sickness thoughout this pregnancy (2nd time around) and am still getting sick with even just the slightest foul smell!

When I was pregnant with DS I would have a month where I gained 10 pounds and then the next month I would gain only 1-2 pounds. It really varies, so don't freak out over one month's gain. Also, I gained about 45 pounds total and lost 90% of it by 8 weeks and all of it by 5 months post. I was 15 pounds under my prepregnancy weight by 7 months post. I didn't start workign out until 5 months post, but then I hit it hard and kept a strict eye on my diet. I know girls who gained 20 who are still holding on to the last 10 pounds over a year later. So, just do what your body needs and please don't stress! Gaining more does not always mean you will hold on to more after birth or have a hard time losing it. I totally stressed over my first pregnancy and now I know that was silly becuase my body just works that way.

  • With my first I gained 15lbs by 21 weeks.  It really leveled out for me after that, and in total I gained 25 lbs at 41 weeks.
  • I've heard that too many sugary fruits can cause excessive weight gain - not sure how true this is.  I try to choose lower sugar fruits.
  • I wouldn't stress about it too much. As long as you're not eating junk, the weight will come off. Figure that 20-25 pounds is actual baby related weight (more water, big boobs, more blood, baby, etc). If you're all belly like me, that could be more. Every one's different.

I feel the same way. I'm super stressed about my weight gain. I was 108lbs (5'2") prior to pregnancy and at my last OB appt on Friday I was 127lbs. UGH! I don't understand. I'm a vegetarian and eat healthy. I'm going to gym and walking after work. It's so frusterating. I though I'd only gain 25-30lbs the whole pregnancy and that seems impossible at this point.

  • My next appointment is next week at 24/1, and I think baby had a growth spurt since my last appt at 20 weeks...I'm already up 7lbs from my last appt, so I'm almost there with you--17 total so far!  I think it's possible to stay within the healthy range, but I've also started watching to make sure I'm not over-indulging and getting 30 minutes+ of activity every day.  Make sure you're drinking enough water too--dehydration can cause water retention, as counterintuitive as it seems.

  • Everyone is different.  If you want to figure out what is the right weight-gain for you I would actually call your mother and your grandmother on your father's side.  These are the people that will give you the biggest clues as to how your body will react throughout the pregnancy.

  • I gained 7.5 lbs between wks 15 and 19, and when I asked my doc, she said to watch my carbs, but that some women just gain more than others.  BTW, I was the one who brought up the weight issue, not my ob.  Just keep a journal of what you are eating for the next week or 2, as well as your weights, to see if there's any sort of pattern.  I just know that for me, progesterone makes me hypersensitive to carbs, and there may be something that your hormones make you hypersensitive to as well.  The answer for some, unfortunately, may not be the answer for others.
