Re: Tour questions?

  • -Do you have birthing tubs availible?

-How many visitors are allowed in the room at one time?

-What aids are available to me while in labor? (birthing ball, bar, tub/shower, etc)

-Are the rooms labor/delivery/postpartum or will you be moved to another room after?

Just a few I could think of, hope this helps! Smile

  • We didn't ask too much, but now I have more questions.  You should ask what the hospital supplies for you and baby (i.e. diapers, onesies, etc for baby, underwear, pads, nursing pads, breast pump etc, for you).  Is dad allowed to stay overnight?  What are visiting hours and WHO is allowed to visit.  Some hospitals only allow immediate family.  If you have any other children, what are the rules for them.  How long do you stay for vaginal/c-section deliveries? Where can you get something to eat after delivery?  How far in advance should you request epidural if you want one and between how many centimeters should you ask for it?  Can you pre-register and if you do/don't, what should you bring with you when you're being admitted?  I can't think of much more for now, but if I do, I'll post more.

    These plus timing questions -

    - Do you do the newborn checks in the room or elsewhere?  If elsewhere, when and for how long do you take the baby?  Can DH join?

    - When do you allow visitors?

    - Do you have private rooms? I was shocked that my hospital has both.

    - How long do you usually stay after birth?  Some only do 24 hours for normal vaginal birth and 48 hours for c-section, so be prepared.

  • What level of NICU do they have, and would they need to transport your baby to another hospital if something came up?

Where is the NICU located in regards to the location of your recovery room - same floor, different floors, etc.?

What paperwork do they provide you after baby is born (social security card application, birth certificate applications, etc.)?  Do they send it in for you or should you do that when you get home?

When the pediatrician comes to examine your baby and they do hearing tests, etc, does baby stay in the room with you or do they take them to another location for that?

What "mandatory" things will they do with baby when it's born (like vit. k shots, eyedrops, etc.)?

Do they have a visitor policy for the recovery time?  ie no visitors younger than a particular age, so many at a time, certain times of day?  (DD was born at the beginning of the swine flu scares a few years ago so something you should probably ask about)

The industry standard (which is derived from what most major medical insurance covers) is 2 nights following a vaginal birth, and 3+ following a cesarian birth depending on how the mother is healing up after surgery.  You can of course check with your hospital to be sure but I haven't heard of anything less than that in a very long time unless you are leaving voluntarily sooner.

My hospital does the rule I stated unless your insurance pays for more.  Here in Dallas, many are on Medicaid, which only pays for a shorter stay.  We have a very large extremely poor population, contrary to popular belief about the city.  I need to call my insurance and ask them what they pay for as I just assumed (stupid, I know) that they'd pay for the industry standard.

I had a tour yesterday and I wish I had asked this question.  Most of the other ones you've mentioned were covered thankfully.
