Spitting/blowing raspberries while eating

How do you get your baby to stop spitting his food out when feeding him?  He likes the food but also likes spitting.  We've told him No, no spitting (obviously he doesn't know what spitting is) and that isn't working.

  • I don't think you can stop them from doing it. Though I'd be interested in what people say about this.

  • Wait until he grows out of doing it.  Sorry no advice but they do stop doing it.

  • I don't think there is anything you can do this young. A does it all the time, too. He thinks it's hilarious when I pretend to get mad at him and say things like "what are you doing!?!"

  • My LO does this, and I just take it as a sign that he's done/not interested.  He shows VERY little interest in solids right now, so I don't force it and stop the "meal".  He gets all his nutrition from breastmilk right now, so I just try again the next day.

I usually go "ahhhhhh" and open my mouth wide. He finds this funny and tries to mimic me and that usually distracts him from spitting. Or I go "nom nom nom" which he also finds funny and distracting.

  • Lucy does this too, but it's usually towards the end of her meal.  I think it's her way of letting me know she's done.

  • I read that at this age, when they do something undesirable at meal times, the best thing you can do is ignore it. Laughing or responding could reinforce the behaviour. The radish does it too, but like a pp said, it's usually at the end and it means she's had enough. Or at least she's full enough that she wants to play, so I take the food away.
  • J used to do this a lot. We would tell him "no spitting" too and set the food and spoon down and wait. Usually it would only take a few seconds, but he learned that if he did the raspberries thing, the food stopped coming (and he's very into his food).
