Ugh pregnancy brain and apparently an AW too...sorry

So I went grocery shopping and went to put all the groceries away. Several hours later (maybe 3 or 4) I realized that I left my margarine out, my 3 packs of swiss cheese, pack of shredded mozzerella cheese, and half and half. The swiss cheese were still cold, all 3 packs. The rest were like room temp maybe slightly colder. I need all of them but really do not want to go back out and spend $20 on groceries again...

What would you do? Use them or throw them away and waste money that you really don't want to spend, and need it for other things to buy all new ones.

Would it be safe to eat?

  • I literally just did the same thing.. Only with frozen meals and it was only 20 minutes.. I felt like a dufus.

How long were they left out? I'm not an expert, but if it wasn't long enough to smell funny or taste funny I'd still eat it!

  • Personally, I would keep it all, but I'm stingy and no health expert. Also, are you cooking with the cheese or margarine? If its being cooked, it will cook out contaminates and bacteria it encountered while being left at room temperature for four hours. I think it has to cook at above 325 degrees for at least 15 seconds or something like that to be clean?

  • I did that the other day with ham, but it wasn't cool at all so I threw it out.

Margarine is probably fine, if the cheese is still cool then it should be ok - give it the sniff test. I tend to be on the cautious side about food safety so I would throw it out just in case.

  • usually those closed, sealed, pastured dairy items are ok even if you leave it in a hot car for a while so I wouldn't worry.

I personally would throw it out, since you said it was 3-4 hours? I'm a little weird about that sort of thing though.

We americans are so wasteful about food.  All that stuff that you left on the counter is just fine, even the half n half, unless it was unpasturized.  And I know no bumpie went out and bought unpasturized anything, so you're fine.  Save your money and keep your food.
