Looking for the bumpie

Who has a dc that had a mysterious limp.  And what was the diagnosis?  My neighbor's daughter, 16ish months is exhibiting the same symptoms, yet no fracture/sprain.  For the life of me I can't remember who it was.

  • Yep, that was us.  It's called Toxic Synovitis.  It's like a temporary arthritis in the hip.  Usually follows some sort of viral infection (for Gavin, it was an ear infection).  It lasts 9-11 days.  Gavin's went the full 11 days.  It was scary but really not serious.  My biggest complaint was that it meant he couldn't sit on the potty (it hurt too much) so he had a complete potty training regression.

  • Thank you so much, I'll pass this on to her.  The little girls is in her lower leg, and they (choa and Cobb Hospital) can't find anything.

The way he was limping, it looked like it was his knee or ankle and Gavin wouldn't tell us where it hurt... he just kept saying "OWIE OWIE it hurts it hurts."  But once they ruled out fractures/sprains and the pedi diagnosed the TS, it all made sense.  I will tell you those were the longest 11 days of my life.  I kept thinking, what if they are wrong?  What if we get to 12, 13, 14, etc and he's still not walking?  But my cousin is a pedi PA and she checked him out and concurred w/ the diagnosis so that gave me some peace of mind.  Sure enough, on day 12 the limp was almost completely gone.  Hope she gets better soon!

  • What seems so weird to me is that she's been to 3 dr.'s and all have conflicting info.  I think they ruled out infection at one of them with blood work.  I'll pass on the info, and I really appreciate it.  I hope they can figure it out.  The little girl is only 16ish months so she can't really express "ouch" yet, but they noticed she resorted to crawling instead of walking because of the obvious pain she was in.  So glad Gavin healed in time.  I know I would have been upside down with worry as well.

See that was my question for my cousin- and part of the reason I was so hesitant to believe the pedi's (we saw 2 + CHOA).  They didn't even do bloodwork on Gavin to make this diagnosis- it was more a matter of ruling out everything else.  My cousin explained that since it is caused by the body's reaction to a VIRAL infection, it wouldn't show up in the bloodwork anyway.  Also, he had already been on antibiotics for the ear infection so that would have skewed the bloodwork as well.  He had it right at Christmas which totally sucked but was good b/c my cousin was home so she checked him out for me during our family party.  You should have seen us- my parents, grandparents, aunts uncles all standing around waiting for her to explain why he was suddenly crippled.  Like she was still in med school.  LOL.  It's funny now, but at the time, we were all so worried.  It is definitely a bizzare illness.
