pool safety

My parents have a pool and they watch DCs 3 days a week.  They live in a ranch with a finished LL.  The LL walks out to the pool and is also where the bedrooms are, including where DS naps.  He has always been good about staying in bed until an adult comes to get him and he doesn't play in the LL by himself or wander out the door by himself.  At least he doesn't do any of these things YET.  DH and I have been discussing what can be done to keep DS safe as he gets older and more curious/daring and prevent any accidents.  My parents have a security system that beeps whenever a door is opened, but our fear is that it is so common to hear the beep that it wouldn't be enough of a trigger to alert them.  DS is in swim lessons and we all (including my parents) work with him on getting to the side of the pool and getting himself out.  What else can be done to help prevent him from getting out to the pool unsupervised?  I've heard about pool alarms, but don't know anything about them.  Any advice would be appreciated.  The more DH and I were discussing this tonight, the more freaked out I was getting!

Re: pool safety

  • I know there are sensor alarms that go off if something weighing more than 25 lbs. (or some similar weight) breaks the water when the alarm is on. I would think that would ease your mind somewhat, because I agree that the door alarm is probably so commonplace that it wouldn't even be noticed.

  • Either lock lower level, or move the nap place.  My niece was the same, until one day she climbed out a window that overlooked the pool.  She was not ever interested in going alone, but something sparked her attention one day.  She fell in and was found quickly-thank god, but did need CPR.  Her mother was a nurse and thought she had kept everything safe. Her pool was fenced and locked at all times.  Kids are tricky, and smart.

  • I would invest in both a pool sensor (an alarm will sounds if something breaks the water) and a door alarm. You can put an alarm on the door that will sounds very loudly and nonstop until it is shut. Also, keep all windows closed and locked during naps.
