How to give the news

I just made my decision that I'll be SAH starting July 1st. I guess I'm wondering:

  1. How much notice did you give (they can't function without someone in my position - I run all of our web stores and marketing for our company and all of our distributors)
  2. How did everyone take the news?
  3. How much notice did you need to give your daycare?
  4. Did you "burn bridges"?
  5. Any advice?
I was going to tell my daycare provider this morning and I ended up having a nervous breakdown in the car. I think I'll try to tell her tomorrow. Back story: her husband just went into assisted nursing care and her daughter just started college. I really love the woman and don't want to put her in any financial stress. She's been amazing and we love her. Also, I suck at confrontations and uncomfortable conversations. Sad

    1) I gave informal notice to the bank I worked at 3 months in advance with the offer to train my replacement. I gave a formal, written resignation for their records a month before I left.

    2) I had a good relationship with my employer and coworkers and we all got along well.  While it was sad when I left, it was expected as I didn't live in the area (45 min commute) and I was pg with DS, plus we were moving DD#1 to a school near our home.

    3) No.  I kept up my normal work production until the day I left, including training my replacement.

    4) Thank them for the experience and any opportunities you were given.

  • I can't answer your questions but did want to comment about the daycare- If you think about it- giving the lady plenty of heads up is the best thing to do in this situation. It gives her time to either fill the spot (without too much time between kids- which would equall time without pay) or decide to get by on less income. Be honest with her- You love her and love the time your child has spent with her- but you'll be staying home as of x day.

(oh and check your contract as far as how much notice you "have" to give. if no contract- id say give as much notice as you can.)
