Espresso versus black?

How do the differ?  I went with the Graco Lauren finally and decided to go with black which just came back online.  I think it will be the easiest to match since we are buying all of our furniture seperately versus as a set (bought bureau in a black/brownish/red hue but next to black in store it looked closest to black versus what I consider espresso) and FIL is making us a bookshelf which I think will be easier to paint black versus trying to do espresso to match.  I am obviously not changing my crib color now but I am just curious how espresso compares to black.  TIA!

Re: Espresso versus black?

  • Espresso is a very very very dark brown stain...if not in good light, it almost looks black.

  • Well maybe i should have gone with espresso then.  It looked more brown out in the sunlight (the dresser we dropped!)  Oh well, we will make it work :)

  • I am sure you can make it work! They are very similar.  All the furniture in our great room was Espresso but when we went to buy a fish tank stand, we could only find one in black that we liked.  It was put in the same room as the Espresso furniture (dining room table, bookshelves, and an end table).  It looked fine together!

  • We did black furniture with DS and I still love it. It was easy to buy furniture here and there and not worry about matching. We bought a bookcase, toy box and dresser from 3 different stores. I had a nightstand that was in great condition that DH painted in matte black and it matched beautifully. Black furniture is super easy, I highly recommend it.

That being said, I also got the Lauren in Espresso for #2 because I thought that brown would be relatively easy to match as well. Its beautiful although it has a little more red undertone than I expected but I think the color will be easy to match. But nothing is as easy as black.

  • DD's furniture is espresso and it's def. brown.

DS's furniture is black. It would be easier to match if you aren't getting everything from one set since espresso browns differ.

  • Thanks everyone...sounds like black is the way to go.  Especially because we will have 4 possibly 5 pieces and all from different places!  I figured the shades of espresso could vary a lot.
