Gift Help Needed

Our babysitter is graduating with her Masters and moving into the new home she and her BF bought in Michigan. :'( We are heartbroken. She's fantastic, she's crazy about our kids, and having her around to watch them has been a blessing to us. I have been trying to figure out what to get her and we just received an invite to her graduation. So should we do two separate gifts (graduation and a separate housewarming/thanks for everything gift)? Or should we do one gift?

And if so, WHAT should we get her? Lowes/Home Depot gift card seems so impersonal but so useful with a new home. I'm not sure of her decorating taste so I don't know what to get for the house. I like pens for graduation gifts but that's not a sufficient gift to cover everything. Someone suggested gift cards to places in the place to which she is moving but I don't know the area and don't have time to figure that one out.

Help us out. What are your suggestions? We're looking to spend about $200. TIA!

  • I know it might seem impersonal, but I'm thinking a v/mc gift card. You could have the kids (ok, well just K) help decorate a card and write something heartfelt. I'm thinking - moving to a new place, new home, just getting done with a Master's....that's a lot going on! Having some extra money to spend on whatever she feels necessary might be extremely helpful. As much as I love giving personal gifts, it just seems so much more practical to give something she could definitely use.

  • I think you should do 2 seperate gifts... a gift card to Lowe's would be great for graduation.

Then something more personal as a thank you... When I was a nanny in college and left the family to move to Chicago, they bought me a Tiffany chain bracelet (obviously you don't have to do Tiffany) and put the kids 2 birth stones as charms. I LOVED it and still wear it to this day. Something like that maybe??? A Pandora bracelet.. something she can keep forever that reminds her of your family Big Smile

  • Two gifts - 1 practical (GC/cash) and 1 that is more personal/memento (a framed photo of your kids with a "thank you" written on the photo mat, or something like that).
  • I think a gift card to Home Depot would be great!  At least I would of loved that with a new home.  One with that large of amount would be a blessing to have:)  Things add up so quickly.  And they won't have more stuff to move too.  Like posted above, just have the kids make her cute cards.  They can even do graduation and moving/good bye ones seperatly.

  • I love my Troll or Chamilia bracelets.  I started out with just a few charms, and it is something that can always be added to for special occasions.  I love looking at them and the sentimental reminders that each charm brings me.  I know there are some graduation charms and you could get a charm to remind her of the kids (Chamilia has a cute brother/sister charm with boys and girls encircled holding hands).  I actually have a Pandora bracelet but like the other two brand bracelets better.  All 3 of the charms will fit on a Troll brand bracelet, and Chamilia or Pandora charms are interchangeable on both of those bracelets.

I got it. Get her some Wolverine gear. Nothing says welcome to Michigan like some sweet University of Michigan attire. Can I get a 'Go Blue'?!? Big Smile
