EBF when starting solids...

Just curious...i currently EBF w/ the occasional bottle when i work 2 days a week.  But I was thinking about just nursing until 6 months (DS is 3 months now) and then EP up until a year because I know when they start solids they will drink less BM because it's not their only source of food then.  Has anyone else done this?  Does anyone have any pros/cons about this idea??  TIA!

  • It should still be their primary source of nutrition.  I'm sure you've heard the saying "Food under one is just for fun", meaning they shouldn't be dependant on solids as a major source of nutrients.  I would worry about supply, as babies are more efficient than the pump.  Other than that I don't see any reason not to do it if that's what works for you.  I know personally I'm too lazy to EP, its just too much work for me!  I know I would skip pumping sessions and my supply would take a hit.

  • We started solids at 6 mo but that was in addition to & not a replacement for BFing. He didn't really start dropping sessions (on his own) until 9ish months when he started getting the hang of sippy cups & finger foods. It went pretty quickly after that from purees/cereal to all finger foods by 11-12 months. He still got BM 4x a day until 12.5 mo when I stopped pumping at work. He gets whole milk during the day & BFs morn/night. Switching to EP when you don't have to sounds like a lot of work.

  • What PP's have said.  BF or FF, milk is their primary source of nutrition until at least 12 months.  Soilids are taste and texture.

  • Your LO should still be nursing a lot at 6 months.  DS didn't start dropping nursing sessions until closer to 10 months.  At 11.5 months we're doing 4 sessions a day.  If it were me, I would wait longer to EP since BF is so much easier.

  • We are just running into this now.  Our daughter started solids a couple of weeks ago and is now really getting the hang of it.  It took a couple of weeks, but now she has dropped one of her bottle feedings during the day while I'm at work which is really exciting for me, because I've been able to really build up my stash (by continuing to pump as though she needs the extra bottle) and I'm hoping to stop pumping at work soon (just pumping first thing in the morning, then nursing when she wakes up, and nursing once I'm home from work).  I think she is just eating more at each feeding and staying full longer because of the solids.  I can finally see a light at the end of the pumping tunnel....

I would also stick to BF rather than pumping if you can - it's so much easier!

  • DD is on solids 2 times a day, and she only cut out 1 feeding. At night she gets feed, but I nurse her right after to get her good and full for bed. So theres still a lot of BF to do.
