my dh proposed to me on a cliff in hawaii at sunset. it was christmas, 2001. after 9/11, his company went out of business. i'd just graduated from college and moved in with him. we'd had tickets to go to hawaii with his family for christmas, and we decided we should still go, even though we had a hard time making ends meet and no one wanted to hire me. i kept thinking that it seemed so weird that he hadn't saved more money just in case he lost his job... he's just kind of a responsible guy like that. when he proposed, i remember thinking, "oh, there it is."
i still can't believe he didn't try to return it. it still makes me feel kind of spoiled and special.
Re: tell us how you got engaged
I was flying into Houston for Alex's big company Christmas party. Alex had everything planned out to propose when I arrived but, my flight was late (like 6 hours late) and I didn't get in until almost 2am.
He was so defeated that his plans were ruined. He ended up just doing something really sweet and intimate as soon as we got back to his apartment. He kept apologizing b/c it wasn't as spectacular as he had hoped but it was perfect anyways!
Long story short - I love winter, so he came over early and threw snowballs at my window to wake me up (didn't hear the doorbell). He said he wanted to be spontaneous and take me snowshoeing through the woods by the house where he grew up. Okay fine, lets go.
We got there and I saw a basket with champagne chilling in the snow and I am SO STUPID because I go "aw look! Someone set that up" Well, duh it was DH. He dropped to his knee and bada boom bada bing, we were engaged.
My husband is the worst person on keeping surprises. It was nearing X-mas time and he decided that he wanted to ask me to marry him. He put a down payment on a ring and was going to ask me 4 months later at a baseball game where we went for our very first date. Instead, x-mas eve night he mentioned it to me and I told him that if he ever asked me I'd say yes in a heartbeat. So he asked me, right then and there. No ring, no sappy proposal, no sweet date night. Heck, he didn't even get down on one knee until a few days later when he decided he wanted to properly ask me.
So yup, nothing exciting. But it was still perfect. We ended up getting married on the day he originally planned to propose.
Married: 5/12/07
DD: 7/28/10
TTC#2: 10/2014
DH suggested we have dinner on the back patio one night. He set the table and excused himself, leaving me on the porch. He went around the apartment lighting candles and then came back out onto the porch wearing the same outfit he wore on our first date. We both know the outfit well because I've commented a few times about how cute I thought he was that night.
Him: Recognize this outfit?
Me: Uh, duh...
Him: I wore this on our first date, now think of this as our last date.
And he got down on one knee and pulled the ring out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. I don't think he realized how his "last date" comment actually came across, but I didn't care.
I'm glad that he proposed in private and didn't make a big thing about it.
The Nest/Bump sucks and won't let me change my location. I'm in Arkansas, not Florida.
We started dating in Feb 06.
On March 31st 06 (I was 18) I drove down to NC where he was stationed for a weekend trip since I was still in highschool.
On April fools day we were driving around Camp LeJeune and he was acting really nervous. He pulled over by the lake and we talked for a while. He then proposed. I said no because I thought he was joking. He is a jokester and it was April fools day. Not to mention I was 18 and we had only been dating for two months. He asked a second time and showed me the ring. He has so a nervous and had a really hopeful look on his face. I knew he wasnt joking then. I said yes the second time he asked. We got married two months later! Nothing too special. The diamond in the ring had been in his family for a long time and his mom took it out of her ring to give to me. This June is our 5 year anny.
Right? We still laugh about it.
He carved me pumpkins that spelled "Will you marry me?" on October 30th. He had them lit in the backyard and got me to go out there. Shocked the hell out of me. I had no idea it was coming.
H rented a cabin near where we live in December. He picked me up from work and blindfolded me. When he stopped the car, he told me to look out the window, there was a horse-drawn carriage sitting in the snow. We got out and they took up to the cabin back in the woods.
H was walking around showing me the cabin, there were candles, rose petals, chocolates etc all over. When we got to the bed there was a giant question mark made of rose petals in the middle of it. He asked me if I knew what the question mark was for, I played dumb and said no and that's when he dropped to his knee and asked me to be his wife.

My H proposed at the Screenland, the movie theater here in KC where we had our first date, in March 2009.
He suggested we see a movie that night, saying the movie itself was a surprise. We got there late -- it had already started -- and the movie was the Coen Brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy. (I've talked about it before, but we met when he posed a fake craigslist ad based on The Hudsucker Proxy entitled "Clever imbecile seeks honest-to-goodness Muncie girl," in which he said that his "turn-ons" were "circles and/or drawings of circles.") The Screenland plays awesome older movies all the time (e.g., The Big Lebowski), so I wasn't suspicious.
About halfway through the movie, he asked me to help him make a beer run. Instead of going to the concession stand, he took me into a side room and pulled out a ring. I heard applause and turned around to see our parents, his brother, and his best friend standing in the doorway. My parents took this picture:
Then we all went to the lobby to drink champagne.
As it turned out, H had arranged the whole thing with the owner of the Screenland. The people in the audience were all in on it (he'd handed out fliers saying "Help me propose to my girlfriend" the week before). He got us there late on purpose, to make sure I wouldn't see anyone I knew in the audience. The owner gave everyone free admission as long as they bought drinks. And the copy of the movie they played belonged to my dad.
It was pretty awesome.
ETA and we had hula hoops at our wedding.
I love this story. So many people obsess over the proposal and I love the simplicity of "we decided to get married."
Also, my folks got engaged after 6 weeks and 35 years later are happily married!
He got alphabet magnets and spelled out "Will you marry me", I got home from work, walked into the kitchen and saw the fridge. He also had a giant sushi feast waiting for me.
It was simple but so are we.
(I also knew he was going to ask and I was getting impatient.)
My husband and I got together in high school and dated all throughout college. My junior year of college (his senior) at Christmas break, he went with me to my grandmother's farm in SW Missouri. She lives in the hills and her farm has some beautiful woods on it. One afternoon we were pretty bored so we decided to go for a ride on the four-wheeler in the woods. He drove us out to the middle of the woods then turned off the four-wheeler. I asked him what he was doing and he said I need to ask you something. He turned around and pulled a ring out of his pocket and asked me to marry him. Later, he told me he meant to get down on one knee, but he was so nervous that he forgot!
I love reading everyones stories. So romantic. I think any time two people get engaged, no matter how they do it, it's pretty amazing.
We were on a trip to Oregon, we have quads and dirt bikes and my DH LOVES riding at the sand. I was laid off from work so I really wasn't expecting to get engaged any time soon, even though we had been together 7 years at the time.
DH wanted to take our quads to the beach and watch the sunset one night. He NEVER wants to do stuff like that so I agreed. We were bummed bc we got to the top of a dune and realized it was cloudy off the coast and there was no sunset.
The next day we rode and rode and then again he wanted to go watch the sunset that evening. I wasn't feeling it but he begged, so I was like "when does this ever happen?" and took him up on the offer. We rode to the beach and there were other people riding up and down. He asked if I wanted to go to a less populated part of the beach, I argued, didn't want to put my helmet on again LOL he was like "come on!" So we went and we were cuddling on a big log watching the sunset and it was cold. I put my hand in his sweatshirt pocket and he looked at me funny. I had no idea what the deal was but my ring was in there and he thought I felt it. (I didn't) He was like "I think you just ruined the surprise" I was asked what he was talking about and he whipped out the box and showed me the ring. I was IN SHOCK! Then he asked me to marry him... now we live happily ever after! LOL
DH told me he was going out of town with his friends. So I planned to get dinner and go to the movies with mine. One of my BFFs is one of his BFFs now wife (then just GF), she planned where we would eat. So as we are heading to the restaurant we were going to pass by a little park downtown. She said she wanted to get some pictures since the trees were all wrapped with Christmas lights.
We start walking over there and I hear a guitar playing and I look up and see DH, he starts singing "Love Me Tender" as his friend is playing along. At the end he gets down on one knee and asks. Then we all went to dinner to celebrate where a bunch of our friends were waiting.
Man, all of these threads are going to get my DH laid tonight.
Hahaha!!
Our stories are almost exactly the same. I told DH this and he said "sounds like a pretty awesome guy". lol
