High-Risk Pregnancy

Another GD Question...

In your experience - do you get higher blood sugar readings when you are dehydrated/ didn't drink enough?

I'm chronically not getting enough to drink -especially on the weekends when I run around with DD like crazy. My numbers tend to be higher - whereas during the workweek I sit on my butt in front of a computer with a jug of water my only companion and my numbers are great...anybody else have this happen?

Re: Another GD Question...

  • Nope but it sounds like it does for you.  Maybe leave a couple water bottles in your car so it's more at hand.

  • Dehydration will cause higher numbers. Something about the concentration of the blood sugar in your blood, I don't remember exactly how it was explained to me. I find it's easier for me to keep up my water intake if I have a jug instead of a class, so I use the giant 30 oz straw cup I got from the hospital when DD was born. DD thinks it's awesome because mommy has a straw cup like she does and always wants me to take a drink at the same time as her - she's apparently an excellent encourager, LOL.

  • Absolutely!  The doc wants me to drink a gallon of water a day.  If I get less than 1/2 a gallon, I can definitely tell a difference in my numbers.
  • I feel like my numbers trend higher if I'm tired or dehydrated. I've also found that if my sugar is over 130 I drink a ton. I could easily down 32 ounces in an hour when my sugars are up in that range. Once the sugar levels drop I feel less thirsty.
  • Yes- I have higher numbers when I don't drink enough- especially if I haven't had enough water by x time or by x meal, I know my numbers will be higher (i.e. by lunch I need a minimum of 32 oz in my system).

  • Thanks everybody! It makes sense  - but wasn't mentioned by my Docs...obviously it's common sense to drink a lot when pregnant...problem is I never feel thirsty...my first indication that I'm dehydrated is when I get a headache or start feeling loopy...

MUST MAKE A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO DRINK MORE WATER!
