DH has been wanting another dog....help!

Okay, we have a two year old yorkie, Sampson (two tomorrow) :) and DH has  been wanting another lil doggie..well, even with getting pregnant...he STILL wants another dog. He say's if we dont get one now...we won't in the future when the baby comes etc. Now, I have pretty much been like 90% opposed to getting another dog....but...his birthday is coming up..and I did always say IF we did get another...I would want to rescue our 2nd as we bought our first from a friend...

I'm thinking we can do two dogs..two small dogs..he wants either another yorkie, a mini grey hound or a mini dachshund :) And.......there is the cutest lil mini dachshund up for adoption at a place here in our city...open adoptions are THIS saturday...DH's b-day is next Friday.................I'm contemplating getting it as an early b-day gift....or not at all...I'm only stressing thinking that two dogs will be SO much more work..DH says not all that much more, he does the majority of the "potty" outings than I do (I admit) and he is right ONCE we have our LO, I will not want a second dog..maybe better to get one now to get into a routine? Get used to two and train them together...? What do you think? Any of you have two furbabies?? TIA!

  • Whew!  More power to you...

Our two dogs are almost more than we can keep up with as is (inside yorkie, outside lab mutt)...I would say hold off because I wouldn't want to add any more to my plate now.  BUT...I haven't seen the puppy yet and I'm a weak one when it comes to animals.  Once I saw it I would have to have it =)

  • We have two small dogs (see siggy pic).  I don't really think it's much different than having one as far as day to day stuff.  We have a yard now but used to live in an apartment.  I felt like taking one out was as easy as taking them both since they are small.  It does help that they keep each other company.  Our first dog was an "only child" for his first 4 years and I've found that he's much less needy now that he has a buddy.  However, something to keep in mind is that you will double your vet bills, food purchasing, etc.

If you can handle the extra expense, then I say go for it!  It may help your dog adjust better when the baby comes too since he will have just adjusted to having a second dog around.

We have two LARGE dogs and 3 indoor cats. If you're going to get another dog I'd do it now so that they're a part of the family by the time the baby comes along.

You say he's up for adoption - has he been with a foster family? If so, that would be great b/c you might have a sense of how he does with other dogs as well as kids, and if he already has some basic training/"manners."

I would NOT want to bring in a new puppy right now - I feel like our almost-year-old dog is still a handful - but wouldn't be opposed to a slightly older dog where I knew what I was getting into as far as temperament, obedience, etc. I agree that two dogs - assuming they get along - are great for wearing each other out and entertaining each other rather than one dog always needing your attention.

  • the cons are you will have another dog to train and feed. I don't think it will take too much more time because you can walk, feed and potty them together. There is also the added financial expense for food and medical care.

the pros are that your current dog will have a new friend and this might be a good thing for when the baby comes. We have a cat and dog and they are close. I am glad they have some company because they don't always get all the attention they deserve.

I'd definitely do it now so you can train and get everything taken care of now before the baby arrives.

  • I have a Yorkie about the same age that we sort-of rescued 3 months ago!  We have a lot of problems because he has EXTREME separation anxiety (to the point where he hurts himself trying to get out) when we leave.  I told DH that if he wants a 2nd dog, the best time to talk me into it would be waaaay before we have the kid, so we'd have time to train & get used to the routine of 2 dogs.  Also, I'm thinking a lot of the work necessary is already being done (walking them, potty breaks, etc.)  If you want to do it, I think now is the time!  We're early enough in the pregnancy to still do a little work.
  • Thanks for all the input ladies! I should add, our yorkie is totally house broken thank God, he is totally on a schedule and all, doesnt yap/bark like I thought a little dog would....he's awesome..the dog that is up for adoption, yes he is in a foster home at the moment.. he is 3 years old but b/c he is a mini dachshund he will only get to about 10 lbs max :) sooo cute...im weighing everything... :)

  • I agree that  now would be the time to do it... IF you do want another dog. We've had our two large dogs for 6/7 years and they are a huge part of our family. They are also best friends. It is more expensive to care for two, but we are happy with our decision.

  • We have two dogs - a pug and a rottie mix. I definitely wouldn't add another to the mix, but we've had them both together for three years, so they're definitely trained, in a routine, and when we travel, they stay with my mom, so we have a pretty good setup!

If you are contemplating adding another dog, I would definitely say get it now to give you guys and the two dogs plenty of time to get used to one another and into a routine that will be easy to manage when the LO comes.

FWIW, my husband REALLY didn't want another dog, but I did, and he gave in and we got our pug and honestly, we couldn't imagine life without the two of them together!

    butting in::

you have one at 5, one at 3, 8 week old and you are pregnant again?

whew, god bless you! i don't know if i could do it. only 6 weeks not being pregnant has to be tough on your body!

and on the dogs, i would do it now if you are going to, that way they are trained by the time baby arrives, and you can make sure they are getting along. the idea of training a dog while you have a newborn, is scary and he's probably right - you probably won't want another if you want until after baby is born. we got my newest furbaby in the end of October last year, and i got a BFP in January and i was worried about having to take care of him and the baby. but now, he's good and trained and now that i got my 2nd BFP, i'm not worried at all. he's a good boy now.

good luck in whatever choice you make!

EDIT* it sent before i was ready, woops!

  • We have 3 dogs (two dachshunds and an English bulldog). Honestly, I would never get another dachshund. I love them, but they are notoriously hard to housebreak. The ONLY one of my dogs that ever "goes" in the house is my 10-yr old mini-dachshund. I have been told by several breeders that this is a problem with the breed, if they're upset or lonely or bored or whatever, they just find a place they think is hidden and pee (my dogs favorite place is our walk-in closet).

yikes! thanks for the tip....that is a deal breaker for me. I hate HATE hate dog pee/poo in the house. I know sometimes there will be an accident or two but...for it to just be a problem isnt something I want. I mean, we have friends who's kids come over and crawl around and God willing one day our LO crawling around...dog pee on the floor isnt ideal LOL...I was gonne read up on the breed soon :)

I would say do your research and make sure you can finance another dog (stuff happens with pets as we have learned). Our second pup is tiny and had a simple vomiting bout over switching food, but since she was so little she got dehydrated and had to be hooked up to IVs which wasn't cheap! So things happen, keep that in mind.

That being said,  we had our first dog for 1 1/2 years when we added a puppy and we couldn't of been happier. They are best friends, they do everything together. Though they get jealous at times I couldn't imagine now not having two. It's a relief to know if we go out they have each other. And like PP have said now would be the perfect time to get one in order for the two dogs to bond and the other to be trained before you add a baby to the mix. We got lucky in that our puppy followed our dog around and picked up its habits really quick.

  • I have a black lab and she was a handful at first to potty train but after that it was pretty easy. I love animals and would love to get another something right now so I say go for it but except hard work. Luckily you have awhile before baby comes so you should be fine! I have never had a small dog tho and I heard they are more work. Either way GOOD LUCK!
