BC plans after birth

So, I'm planning to talk to my doctor tomorrow about available Birth Control options after LO is here, and safe while breast feeding.  What are you guys planning on doing?

I took BCP from the time I was 18 until just after our wedding (so I guess 24) and until we were ready to have a baby we used other methods... I am not fully educated on the other options out there, hence wanting to talk to my doctor.

Re: BC plans after birth

  • Nothing for us.  We will abstain until the doc says sex is OK, but no protection.  We want another LO and the sooner the better since we are getting up there.  Chances are it won't matter anyway since we have fertility issues, but if we get lucky, all the better.

  • I will be getting the Paraguard IUD. This is what I got after DS#1 and I really liked it. Everyone reacts a little different to it, but it was the right thing for me. One thing that was really important to me was no hormones.

  • With DS #1 I went on the mini-pill, but I still had a lot of breakthrough bleeding and it made me nervous as I have heard missing one day or not taking at the same day can end up with an oops since it is such a low dose pill.  Ended up switching to a different pill when I was done nursing.

I think I am getting the Mirena IUD this time around as we are likely done after this one but it is totally reversible if we change our mind.  The Dr said I can get it inserted at 8 weeks and it is as effective as getting your tubes tied.  I know quite a few people who have it and like it.

  • I will either be getting the Essure placed or I will be getting my tubes tied. I have signed all necessary paperwork, but it all depends on delivery.

Condoms and charting (condoms 100% of the time, not just when the chart says so. ) Birth control pills screw up my whole system and give me focal migrains and body numbness so I wont go near them.

  • I'm thinking Minera as well, until we decide if we're one and done -- if that's the case, hubby will get the old snipperoo.

  • I am so afraid of getting pregnant right away! I have heard the implant, or IUD mirena(?) works well with BF. Its a five yr plan, I'm not quit wanting to wait that long. Also My ins doesn't cover it, boo! So I will be curious what others have to say, Good question

  • This topic was brought up at my 36 week appt and the midwife recommended an IUD. But I think I will just go back on the pill. I don't plan to BF past 8 weeks, so that's not an issue, and I never had any problems on the pill or coming off it. I think we'll TTC again after just a year or so, so I don't want anything long term. Honestly, we hardly ever even have sex so condoms would really suffice, I just don't want to go back to that.

This for me too.  My migraines are 100X worse when I'm on birth control pills so I plan on never touching them again.  Although we probably won't be charting... just using condoms all the time.

this exactly! Charting can only be truly effective (if you can even say that) when you are getting enough sleep so initially it is not a good way to gauge your fertility b/c your temperatures may not be accurate.

I am not a fan of taking hormones so I won't get on the pill and we will be trying again for another one in about a year so I don't see the need for an IUD.

  • I really don't want to do hormonal BC anymore (I was on it for 10 years before)- so I guess my options are condoms or the non-hormonal IUD.  I'd do the IUD but it makes me a little nervous for some reason- I'll probably talk to my doctor about it.  Either way we probably won't TTC for at least 3 years from now so it might be the most cost effective and easiest method.

  • I was pretty sure on my decision on mirena being that I am only 23 and do not plan on having another LO in the next 3-4 years but here lately I have heard so many horror stories from close friends! Cysts, implanting itself into ones ovary, bad breakouts, extremely bad cramping, and such.  My doctor has also suggested the ones that go in the arm but they scare me.  I had nuvaring in when I became pregnant so I am iffy on that one.  I am back to square on I do suppose!

    This, word for word.

  • thanks for posting this! DH and i haven't really talked about timing too much. we both want to enjoy this LO before deciding if/when we want to have a 2nd. i really hated being on the pill. i feel so much more grounded now. it did take us a while after coming off to conceive. i'm going for my 36 week tomorrow so i'm sure we'll talk about it :)

  • Once the doctor says it's ok to start having sex again we probably won't use anything! We want another LO and I have no problem with Irish twins (2under 1) if we get that lucky! When the next pregnancy happens it happens.

  • I have a feeling we'll go the condom route too, because I was not a fan of BCP when I took them.  Condoms and charting worked for us for 3 years.  I just know DH will be bummed to go back to condoms, but I guess it's that or abstinence!

I figure after six weeks of NOT having sex right after baby is born my husband will be glad to have it regardless of having to wear a condom.

In the past, he has been a fan of lambskin condoms. (we tried so many different kinds).

I also got pregnant when using the Nuvaring, so I wont be going back to that)))

  • I have no idea what I want to do with regards to BC. I know we won't be having sex for the 6 weeks after delivery (at LEAST!) So I have some time to discuss it with the dr, I just want to use whatever is safe while bf'ing. I don't really want to do the pill, but we will be trying for another baby most likely in about 2-3yrs so it can't be anything too long term.

  • Condoms and charting. I know the charting won't be effective until I am sleeping regularly and even then, my breast feeding schedule will make things a little screwy. I'm DH won't be too thrilled about the condoms, but until I have a regular, predictable cycle we'll need to do something to supplement the charting.

  • Not really sure.  I didn't get my first PP period with DD until she was almost 8 months.  Probably just going to chart and use condoms, possibly the mini pill.  Haven't really put too much thought into it.  We aren't sure if we are done so it won't be anything permanent.

  • We'll be using condoms until we decide whether or not we'd like to have one more child. If we come to the conclusion that we're satisfied with just the one, then DH has offered to have a vasectomy. I've never felt great taking BCPs (and I've taken like 5 different kinds!).

  • I'll be doing the Mirena again...I had it before I got pg and while it does have some flaws (cramping, especially at first, was my biggest complaint) i loved not having to "do" anything to keep it staying effective. I'm not great about taking the pill or any routine things like that, and with a new baby I can only imagine it will be worse. And while it is effective for 5 years, you can get it taken out anytime and you return to normal fertility very quickly. (and for the record, taking it out hurts WAY less than putting it in, which isn't pleasant unfortunately) I did have a friend with complications from having it placed after a c-section, but the doctor even told her if they had waited a few more weeks after delivery that it probably would have been fine. Everyone does react differently, but personally I love it. Plus, if your lucky it makes your periods disappear so nice bonus there :)
