General mucus plug question

I tried to google this but I'm not getting any answers.  Does every pregnant woman lose their mucus plug prior to labor beginning or is losing your plug then labor always the progression?

Re: General mucus plug question

  • I can't answer this for sure, but I have read on this board that there have been mommies that have not or do not remember losing their plug and I have read that it is impossible not to notice if you do lose it.  Putting those two theories together, I would assume that not everyone loses their plug.

  • I don't have an exact answer, but from what I gather you lose your mucus plug as your cervix starts to dilate/efface...as things "widen and thin" it can't hold it in anymore, so to speak.  So if that's the case, then I guess you lose it before labor?  Good question, though...

  • Very true, Sam_Tiff...however, I had no clue if I had lost mine or not.  I kept checking and never noticed anything.  But the doctor told me yesterday that mine is gone and I lost it...I was shocked, because I never knew.  So I guess sometimes you can totally overlook it, as you said, and not know.  She made it sound like everyone loses their's, it's just a case of if you notice or not.  Who knows...I'm so new to all this and really don't know what I'm talking about, haha.

  • In my childbirth class, they said that losing the MP can be a sign of impending labor but a) not everyone loses it/notices it and b) labor doesn't necessarily start right away after the MP is lost.

This-  From what  I have read from my prego books-  You do lose it before labor, etc.. but many woman do not even notice when they lose it... or it can happen RIGHT before labor (according to my prego book).   Everyone loses it... time may differ greatly it appears.

  • I asked my dr something similar and she told me that the mucous plug thing is a bit of a myth - it can come out, then regrow several times in a pregnancy and really is not an indicator of labor.  (People usually like to group it together with water breaking, but it's not like that at all.)

  • never lost mine with ds1 (unless it washed out when my water broke!) and was 3cm/80% prior to labor starting.  definitely not a pre-requisite for labor.

  • My Dr. said that not everyone notices it bc sometimes is comes out as just mucus/in small pieces not one hard piece.  It could have come out a little at a time as you used the bathroom and you never noticed it.
