Braxton Hicks while Exercising?

I had (what I'm pretty sure are) my first BH yesterday while I was at the gym. No pain or cramping, just tightness and a bit of pressure in my lower belly. It took me awhile to figure out what was going on - I stopped the bike & was walking around the track, they continued while I was walking when I finally realized what was going on.

I was well-hydrated and I don't think I was pushing myself too hard. I have backed off a lot since getting pregnant and I try to be careful. Is this something to be concerned about? Should I stop and rest if they happen at the gym again? Or should I stop completely? I'm almost 20 weeks.

Re: Braxton Hicks while Exercising?

  • I think the same thing happened to me yesterday too while I was at the gym. I was on the stair mill and it felt like my tummy was tightening so I felt it with my hand and it was hard. I kept thinking maybe it was just my imagination or something or I was drinking too much water and it was making me full, but maybe it was BH's.

I'd like to see what other posters have to say. This was my first time experiencing them.

Totally normal!  You've actually probably been having them for a long time now, but you can't feel them.  BH are like "exercises" for your uterus for the big day, it is practicing and getting strong for delivery!

  • I get them all the time when I'm working out. That and my baby hates cardio so she starts moving around like crazy, lol. If you feel like you weren't pushing yourself and you were nice and hydrated, you should be fine. I've kept doing the bike right through them but last time they got pretty intense and had to pause for a few minutes, but it was right at the end of my workout anyway so idk if they would have gotten worse or not.

  • As long as they go away once you finish, you should be fine.  But ask your doc if you're concerned.

Personally I would stop and rest and make sure they go away before continuing...I wouldn't just keep exercising through them.  But as long as they go away when you rest you should be fine...
