Point and shoot died...recommend your camera

I have/had and LOVED my Canon PowerShot, but it just died today. I take tons of pix of my kiddo's.  Feel like I need to upgrade to DSLR, but scared.  More so because of the bulkiness and all the "technology."  Like the compactness of the P&S and I can take pretty good pix with it.  I feel like I might be able to take better pictures with a DSLR, but don't have the $$.  Kind of in limbo on what to do.  Do you have any recommendations?
Anyone can be cool, but awesome takes practice!

I have a Nikon D80 that I have absolutely no idea how to use, but I shoot on automatic.  Someday I'll learn the camera features, but for now, it takes great pictures.  :)

  • I just bought a used Canon EOS Rebel XT.  I bought it used, so it was really reasonably priced, and I got it from a reputable camera store, to get some peace of mind.  So far it's great, but I haven't even had it for 24 hours!  I figure if I really love it, I can upgrade some day.  What I keep hearing is that megapixels don't really matter - make sure you have great glass.

I've had a couple people recommend the Canon SX210 IS for the point and shoot.  Does it have a pop-up flash?  How is it for low light, or action shots?

I have a Canon G11.  It is the closest to DSLR quality but still a point and shoot.  I wanted something I could throw in my diaper bag, not have to carry another bag for.  A newer model has come out, and mine has actually increased in value (didn't know that could happen for digital cameras).  I got mine from a great deal at Best Buy with coupons (spent about $375).  I would definitely recommend the Canon G-series.  It takes beautiful pictures.
  • My oldcamera died 2 days before Christmas, I feel your pain!

I bought (and LOVE) a Panasonic Lumix from Costco, it was $219 and it's AMAZING.  Has tremendous zoom, very crisp on the details, etc.  The Costco people said it's their #1 selling camera ever, and after I bought it, I realized 3 of my friends have the same one, lol.  Highly reccomend!
