Help me get rid of the cat pee smell

My house smells like cat pee. We adopted a kitty from the shelter last month and she apparently hates our dog. She has sprayed ALL OVER our master bedroom, and a corner of our family room.

I've tried a special $$$ cleaner from Petsmart, and bought a steam cleaner last weekend to go over the spots, but no dice. Any other suggestions? It's driving me INSANE. Not to mention that we live on a military post, so when we move in 3 years we will probably have to pay to replace the carpet. Stupid cat.

Help me?

PS- We are currently waiting for a foster slot to open up at a local rescue society to take her in to see if her problem is just the dog. Even after destroying our house we still don't have it in us to take her back to the shelter.

  • From what I know, you can't get cat pee out of carpets w/o replacing the carpet.  When we were house shopping, DH would step foot in a house and say "Nope!"  because he could smell the cat pee (he's VERY allergic).  The realtor said that yes, those people had cats and that they would replace the carpet or deduct it from the price.

You should find out how much it will be to replace it and see if it's cheaper to do it yourself.

  • Have you tried pulling back the carpet and bleaching and scrubbing the sub floor?

This was the only way we could get rid of the smell.

  • Vinegar. I've had pull up the capet and spray the padding. It might be best to replace padding...you can't get it out completely with out cleaning the padding underneath :(

  • Grumble. Thanks ladies. I need to see if I can pull the carpet back without completely destroying it.

  • We've had a similar problem with my cat who got pissed at moving and peed all over the house :(

First, you need to find ALL the pee and get use an enzyme cleaner (like Nature's Miracle) to remove it. If a few applications of that doesn't work, you need to replace the carpet. As long as the cat smells it, she'll continue to pee in those areas because she'll associate that with her litter box.

To find all the pee, use a black-light. Cat pee glows under that!

Like PP mentioned, you might need to pull up the carpet and spray the rug pad. If the pee soaked through that, it can actually soak into HW floors (we had that happen and the only way to remove that smell is to strip the wood and refinish) or even concrete in extreme cases.

I would also look into "curing" the cat and not just removing the cat pee. A vet can obviously help with that :) Our vet suggested antidepressants/antianxiety meds for my cat after we moved and had a baby, if the peeing continued. Thankfully we didn't have to go there. But I guess it's not uncommon.

The vet also suggested Feliway "Comfort Zone" Diffuser. I'm looking at my box right now and it says "Clinically proven to help end urine marking and comfort cats in stressful environments". I got it on Amazon for around $18 I think... and it did seem to work.

HTH! And good luck. That is a stressful thing to deal with!
