Shots - Do you check the syringes?

A gal on the 0-3 month board posted that her pedi's nurse accidentally gave her LO TWO doses of the HIB vaccine instead of 1 HIB and 1 HepB. Most of the responses were supportive, but a few asked why she didn't check the syringes before they were administered.

Do you check the labels/dosage when your LO gets shots/vaccines?

DD had her 8 week shots last week, and I didn't check. Having worked in healthcare before though... I think I might start checking from now on.

ETA: I meant that by having worked in healthcare before, I know how easy it is for errors like this to happen.

I don't, but we follow an alternate schedule so we get fewer shots at a time and there's always a discussion about what we're getting w/ our pedi.  Then when the nurse comes in she always asks again to double check what we're getting and I see her check them then since we're not getting the "norm."

  • Nope - would have never even thought of it.
  • I don't but we always discuss which shots she is getting and then the nurse goes to get them. We follow the traditional schedule but we still go through it in case I want to make changes.

  • I saw that post.  No, I have never checked.
  • I don't check but at both offices we've been at lately the nurse reads the syringe and double checks outloud. At a previous office in Houston we had to initial paperwork for each shot.

I don't think ours have labels on them.  They do bring them in an a tray with sections and each section is marked.  We also discuss with the Dr., then the nurse come in and double checks..
  • Our pedi makes us. We have to sign off as they show us each one.

This...we're on a delayed schedule and so Pedi and I always discuss the shots that I want for that visit (which is no more than 3).  And then they show me the label and read it outloud and I sign for each shot on a paper they filled out.  But man...it takes at least 15-20 mins for them to prep all the shots for this too.  And when I had both kids for their vacs...it seem like an all day event.

  • Yes ma'am. We selective and delay vacc and I always check the dosage/syringe. They are only human, after all, and I would rather err on the side of safety than to have an accidental OD happen with my child.
  • No I don't :(. I will definitely check now.

Same here, but I never would have thought of it otherwise.
