I've noticed in Canada they typically wait until 18-20wks for an U/S...12 weeks for a first prenatal which is your basic weigh in and all the health history etc.......I have had a previous m/c so I pushed for an early U/S at 9 weeks. (Next Monday)... *fingers crossed*
Yep, sounds the same as here. Sometimes there are dating ultrasounds if you have no idea what you dates are, but other than that it's just the one anatomy scan before 20 weeks.
It can be frustrating waiting. I went in to talk to the Dr already, but my first actual pre natal appointment isn't until 12 weeks...5 to go!

I think the only reason he wants me to have a dating U/S is because my last cycle had gone to 66 days, and the one before that was over 40 days. I had gotten really stressed at my job, and it F'ed with my body. I know what my EDD is, I just want to make sure that the dates are similar, and I want to see my baby too!
I think the earliest ultrasound you can have with a "normal" pregnancy is one between 11-13 weeks if you want to scan for down syndrome etc. Then you have to wait until the anatomy ultrasound at 18-20 weeks.
That being said, due to my prior m/c and the awesomeness of my doctor, I've already had two u/s and I'm having one tomorrow, next Monday and the Monday after that to make sure that I make it through the first tri ok. I have to admit that the weekly check-ins really help!
I didn't even have an ultrasound with my previous loss at 8 1/2 weeks! I started spotting and all my doctors would do was beta testing. With this pregnancy I only just went for my confirmation at my family doctor today so I probably won't even see the OB until 12 or 13 weeks. I will likely only have one ultrasound at 20ish weeks.

Re: Canadian mommies, a question!
Yeah, my prenatal appointment was supposed to be on May 30th, but got pushed back to June 14th. I have a dating U/S on June 8th though.
I was curious, that's all!
My first ultrasound had been scheduled at 13 weeks, however due to spotting I had 2 within weeks 6 & 7.
My doctor also didn't seem concerned about betas or anything other than family medical history until I started spotting.
I think as long as there are no complications or prior medical issues they seem to let things progress on your own as nerve-racking as that is.
