postpartum hair

I knew to expect hair shedding postpartum (and I'm right in the middle of it - joy!), but my hair has also turned really, really dry. It is colored, but has always been normal texture. But since I went back to work, it's been really dry and straw-like. I am blow-drying my hair for the first time since December, so I'm sure that doesn't help, but this is way dryer than it has ever been.

Did anyone else experience that? And how do you deal with dry hair? I've always had normal to oily hair.

When I went through puberty, I swear my hair changed & hasn't been the same since.

I haven't really noticed anything other than massive shedding pp, but maybe the hormones (you're still BF, right?) are resulting in a drier scalp?  Do you condition/use shampoo for dry hair?

  • Can you maybe not wash it as often? Or use some hot oil treatments or something?

I had the opposite problem pp - my hair was oily and kind of sticky - it felt like it had honey in it, it was really weird. I got a different shampoo and eventually it cleared up.

  • My hair texture changed postpartum, too. I went from thick, glossy pregnancy hair to thick, untamable dry hair. I've switched shampoos and also went from washing every other day to every third day. It's helped, but I am still learning.

  • I'm losing a ton of hair, and it sucks!  I never had that wonderful thick pregnancy hair...my hair has always been fine, I didn't notice having more of it.  But now I'm losing clumps every time I brush and shower.  I hope it stops soon!

My hair has been a weird combination of oily and dry postpartum.  It's hard to describe.  Before and while pregnant I could go a few days in between washes, but now I have to wash more often.  I also haven't found a shampoo that's working with my hair these days, which is frustrating (I've tried like 10 so far).  When I was BFing my hair was super dry.  Now that I'm not it's that oily/dry combo.

  • Kastle - my hair did change during puberty - it went from wavy to tightly curled.  The curls grew softer in my 20s but pregnancy has made my hair straight with just a little wave.  Odd

As to texture. I have always washed every other day, but my hair is so oily I have to wash it daily now - it just becomes slick and lank on day 2.

  • I had oily hair before and it's still oily now (even more so - ick). I miss my pregnancy hair! The only change I've noticed besides the insane shedding is apparently my hair got darker while pg.... now i have a 1.5" ring around my roots where it's growing out lighter. I went to get my hair cut recently and Samantha said "did you color your hair??" um, no.

I agree with pp - maybe try a hot oil treatment or some other type of moisturizing treatment regularly and see if that helps?

  • I hear you! My hair is frizzier and I am a shedding maniac.

In the past few years, I've gone even more minimalist with my hair. I wash it twice a week and do not condition but a few times per year. Gradually, my hair learned to regulate itself pretty well. At first it was grease with reduced washing, but not my scalp doesn't get over-dryed from so much washing. And, since it has the right amount of oils naturally, I don't need to condition save for when I color it with henna and it gets a little wacked out because of the lemon juice. Pre-preg and PG, I didn't need gel or anything. My hair just worked itself out. Now, it is back to being frizzy. I think I may choose a more accomdating cut for the new texture (AKA go really short again).

  • Hormones seriously messed with my hair throughout pre and post pregnancies.  When I first went of the pill I couldn't believe how oily my hair got so fast.  I have always been able to go 2-3 days between hair washings but off the pill I HAD to wash it every day if not twice a day or it was awful and greasy and smelly.  If it is too dry maybe try one of those frizz reducing serums which would introduce some oil back into it and try to use low heat when drying.
