Dumb question: Ab work

I don't know where I got it in my head that doing abdominal exercises like crunches, etc., weren't good in pregnancy. It doesn't seem like it would be true, but now I'm second-guessing myself.

Pregnancy Ticker

Re: Dumb question: Ab work

  • I'veheard the same thing, although I'm not sure when it becomes a problem.  According to the Mayo Clinic Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy book you should avoid exercises that have you on your back for too long once you're in your 2nd trimester.  But, they say Pilates is a good choice for pregnant women... hmmm.... not sure what to make of that.  I remember being on my back a lot in Pilates.

  • I've just heard that it's more "pointless" in a way, for lack of a better term lol. I've heard it's safe and that you'll get to a point where you can't do them anyhow. Like PP, pilates is safe and that's total core engagement?!?!

  • I asked about this last time around because at the time I was taking a weekly yogalates class.  My MW told me it's ok if you were already doing that type of exercise before pregnancy and to only do the excercises that require you to be on your back until that point when you are no longer allowed to sleep on your back (what week that is escapes my brain right now.  It's some time in the second tri).

As PP said, if you were doing them before, you can continue to do them now until you are no longer able to.  My OB said that core work, not just abs but your back too, is good to continue because the muscle will help support the baby as you and it grow larger.
