Asthma Moms

I was all set to claim victory over permanent breathing treatments at the end of the month and Isaac is now having trouble again ever since the weather changes last week.  Taking him to the dr today bc even extra treatments aren't resolving his coughing.

I thought it was supposed to get better, not worse.  :(

Grrrrr.

Re: Asthma Moms

  • both of my boys had another episode couple weeks ago.  It wasn't because of the weather as much as the grass.  I got it too (I have asthma too).  Pollen really does it for me and my asthma and now I am watching it happen to my boys.  Makes me sad.

  • I'm so sorry.  Don't let your guard down.  There were a couple times when I thought we had won only to have it sneak up on us again worse than ever.  He has now been breathing treatment free for over a year and I still don't believe its gone.  Every runny nose makes me wonder if it will go into his chest again.  The neb is safe in our pantry and I still look at it and wonder when we will need it again.  All of his meds have expired so if he did have an issue now, I would have to call for a refill. His pedi and ENT have warned me to be cautiously optimistic.  That they have seen it go away permanently for some kids while others have a relapse after years of nothing.  Asthma is such an unpredictable illness.

  • It does get better for most kids.....although Harrison was 3 years old before we finally put the nebulizer away for good.  It just takes some time......

  • I posted on FB but saw this and thought to ask: is he on any maintenance meds like Flovent or Singulair?  Those are what did the trick for HC's asthma, at least between colds.  But not sure whether he's been on daily tx of some other sort all this time or not.  Hang in there!!!

  • My kids don't have asthma, that I know of, but wanted to give you lots and lots of hope.  I had asthma really bad all the way up until the end of high school.  I had three different inhalers and had to be hospitalized once because of an attack.  BUT now I'm fine.  I don't even have an inhaler.  I can feel the pollution bother me and I know my boundaries when exercising but I'm fine.

Just wanted to give you hope and encouragement that even if the asthma is bad, eventually most kids grow out of it.

I feel your pain.  I actually dont know if John has allergies or asthma...maybe a combination of both.  We are in the process of testing but his allergist thinks his attacks are asthma related.  He has had three in the 6 months that have sent us to the ER.  I pray that the allergist can help us keep the severe attacks at bay and in the long run he will grow out of it.  Hang in there!!!

  • Isaac has been on some sort of nebulizer treatment since November.  About the end of February we FINALLY kicked out the pneumonia and March and April were awesome with the Pulmicort once a day with the occasional xopenex added when he had some coughing and it always knocked it right out.  This latest bout is pretty nasty.  He's been coughing all day long for three days and Xopenex hasn't touched it much but he had a treatment in the office today and the wheezing subsided.  Unfortunately about 30 minutes later its right back.  Only 30 minutes to his next treatment so hopefully he will get some relief.  At the dr his pulse ox was 100% so at least that isn't taking a hit yet.

So its Xopenex every 4-6 hrs around the clock 2 days then stepping down unless he progresses - which would be bad.  Pulmicort is continued to infinity and beyond it seems.  :(

Danielle- Several of my family members are lifelong sufferers of asthma and they have had symptoms come and go.  Although I seem to have dodged the bullet so far it seems to run in my family.  However, Isaac is getting a much earlier start than anybody else so far.
