Possible peanut allergy. False positive on RAST?

My DD has a history of a milk protein intolerance (that resolved by 1 year of age) and she continues to have mild eczema. So, her pedi tested her blood at her 2 year appointment for peanut allergy "just to be sure." I am sure she did it mainly to put my neurotic DH at ease. We got the call three days later that she got a 3.07 score on the RAST for peanuts.

We have been told that this score means nothing really, but that it is low. Also, we have heard that there are a lot of false positives on the RAST. We have an appt with an allergist on the 31st for a skin test and have Epi Pens at home just in case. Anyone get a false positive on the RAST for an allergen?

Re: Possible peanut allergy. False positive on RAST?

  • its definitely possible to get a false positive (as per my allergist) but i would avoid peanuts until your next test.   3.07 is low, but she can still go into a shock if she eats it.  My son had a super low number to sesame (2 point something) and he still reacted when he had hummus (which had tahini in it, which is sesame).  and peanuts are no joke so i would avoid.

    good luck

  • We got a positives for milk, peanuts, and eggs on the RAST but when DS had the skin test only eggs came back positive. He was really low on the milk and peanuts on the RAST and moderately low on eggs.
