Parenting after a Loss

If you ferberized or cio

I was completely against both but I am at my wits end with this child. She wakes all night long and has no self soothing skills and is a bad napper. Anyways I don't have the Ferber book. What happens after you get the to sleep at the beginning of the night? If they wake again do you repeat the same process as you did in the beginning? Thx Ps, and how did you do it? I am in tears :(

Re: If you ferberized or cio

  • I'm sorry you're having a rough time!  We Ferberized and it worked wonders. But I think it worked because I read the whole book and had a better understand of why were were doing it and what problems we were trying to fix.  Also, having read the book I felt confident enough about my decision to not be a wreck as he cried (which actually wasn't all that much).

I highly recommend that you read it to see if it's even worth trying in your own situation.  It's probably not right for solving every sleep problem!

  • When we were first sleep training and even now, we do not go back in after we closed the door. Just patting him and shushing him only made him mad. We found that extinction (i.e. closing the door, not going back in, and letting him cry till he went to sleep) worked best.

Did this today in fact. DS woke up 30 minutes after he went down for his morning nap. I went in and nursed him and tried for 20 minutes to bounce him back to sleep. Finally, I put him in his crib and walked out. He cried hard for 7 minutes. Then he sacked out and slept for an hour.

GL! I hope she can improve her sleep (and yours) quickly.

ETA: I never read the Ferber book but Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child also referred to CIO methods.

  • I was against CIO but we had to do SOMETHING as DS was still sleeping in our bed at 1 year and waking A LOT...so what worked for us was having DH sit in the rocker right next to the crib for a few nights until DS fell asleep...never took him out, but he'd lay him back down, rub his back as needed, etc. He full on screamed for 1 hour the first night...20 minutes the next...then has been essentially going down without a fight for the past few months. It really, really went surprisingly well. I was shocked!

    Good luck!

  • Oh and he did continue to wake once per night for a bit, so we repeated the same thing if necessary...DH also was always the one since I was still BFing and didn't want him to want to nurse nurse nurse...luckily by 13.5 months he was consistently STTN....we NEVER thought we'd see that day!

  • We won't really talk about naps though...he's still horrible. I usually lay on the couch with him everyday, which clearly has to stop before #2 arrives...I feel like we're so lucky with the nighttime stuff though, so I didn't want to rock the boat...but some nap training will be in my LO's future for sure.

It sucks having a bad sleeper, believe me...I have horror stories...your LO is still very young though, so try to hang in there. I promise it will change.
