Girls who do heavy lifting at work/home

DH is super nervous about m/c (even though we've never been pg, I have a family history) and wanted me to talk to my managers  to get me moved out to another department.  I work in retail and find it totally against my nature to call some guy for help when I need to move 80lb bags of concrete that I know I can do myself lol.  I work with a few older women & men am usually the one jumping in to prevent them from lifting something!  Have you stopped doing stuff like this or can I tell DH he's being ridiculous?

  • If you are used to it I would not see why it should be a problem, although lifting above your head is not ever a good idea. I lift heavy bags of grocerys, heavy children all the time. But 80 lbs seem a bit heavy though so maybe talk to your doctor about it.

  • I lift weights for exercise and so far I haven't changed any of the weights I was using before I got pregnant.  I just listen to my body.  There was one day where it was just feeling like too much so I stopped and just walked for a workout that day.  The next day I was able to complete to workout without a problem.  Talk to your doctor, but I think as long as you feel ok being able to lift as much as you did then I don't think it is that big of a deal.  I know quite a few pregnant ladies on the nest health and fitness board lifted heavy weights well into their pregnancies.

  • I haven't completely stopped lifting heavy things but I try to be more conscious of how much I lift. My DS was born about 8 weeks premature and my mom was convinced it was because the day before my water broke I carried a bunch of groceries in by myself instead of asking for help. I don't know how true that is but its got me trying to be a little more careful this time around. I ask DH for help when he is around and at work I was required to let them know as soon as I found out I was pregnant so they could stick me behind a desk. I'm a Correction Officer.

I'll tell you what my OB told me.

He said something along the lines of don't life heavy things, and I questioned him and asked "Well what about things I normally lift at work?"  He asked me what I would be lifting and how much it would weigh.  I told him I lift things up to 30 lbs on a regular basis and he said that would be fine, but if it's anything 50 lbs or more, I should be asking someone else to do it for me.

So, based on that, I'd ask your OB what s/he thinks about lifting 80 lb bags of concrete.

This.  I worked in daycare last time I was pregnant and I regularly lifted 40 lb children.  I was simply told not to increase how much I lifted (but keeping on with what I was used to was fine) and to listen to my body.  At this stage, you will know if you're lifting/doing too much.  Gauge how you feel regularly at work and take breaks or ask for help as needed.

  • I frequently pick-up my daughter who is 35 pounds and I don't plan to stop anytime soon.  I think your back may start to hurt more as you proceed in the pregnancy though.  You wouldn't want to do anything that would exacerbate that.

  • I was thinking about the same thing today as I was dangling off of a tall ladder.  I can easily get out of heavy lifting, so it's not a big deal, but  just be careful & listen to your body!

  • I agree with listening to your body and how it feels. Like a pp, I've had days where my routine is normal. Now my m/s has me in a mess and I haven't been able to do much of anything. I don't think lifting is supposed to be as bad in this trimester either. I feel better reading everyone else's posts! I wish someone could explain this to my coworkers! Ugh! They know already and they get mad at me for lifting anything! I'm used to being the girl that's totally independent and now I'm not allowed to do anything according to them. Do they really think I would do it if I really thought I was hurting my baby? Maybe I'll have the doc write me up something to get them to shut up :P
