I've been giving Grayson Zantac just like the pedi ordered but he is still uncomfortable and keeps THROWING up. I don't expect him not to spit up at all. When I give him the med, he THROWS up! I've tried giving it on an empty belly (2 hrs after feeding) or on a full belly (right after feeding) or right before his feeding and he takes it and then throws up all over. I'm not talking spit up, I'm talking throws up! This morning it came out of his nose and mouth and flew over my shoulder and hit the floor. I'm guessing it was most of his feeding from 2 hours earlier. It really bothers me. How will I know if it's working if he throws up 1-2 out of 3 doses. He usually only tolerates one dose a day. I plan to call the pedi about this when they open (in 5 mins)... anyone else have this issue?
I'm wondering if I have an oversupply issue, he does gulp and I can hear the milk "hitting the bottom of his stomach" like I've read about. I've thought about calling the LC at the hospital I delivered at to get her opinion.
I'm also wondering if he has a milk allergy... how would I know for sure? Just cut it out? I did that with Bella (not because of reflux but because she was overly fussy) and it didn't help. If you cut out dairy, how long did it take for you to notice a difference in your LO? Did you notice a major difference? Did you cut out ALL diary or just most? (like butter and everything that is a diary product?)
TIA for your help. I feel so bad for my little guy!
Re: Mama's of babes with reflux
Don't know how much help I'll be, but LO had reflux for awhile. Changing to soy formula did help him some as well as the Prevacid - which we went to after the Zantac (which didn't help).
I do know that LO never threw up or spit up with Zantac, but he wasn't really a spitter anyway - his symptoms were more about crying badly when he was on his back, etc.
One of the good things that's come out of his having to take that medicine daily is that he takes medicine from me without flinching at all now (tylenol, etc).
I think I've heard the dairy takes 2 weeks to get out of your system, but I didn't BF long, so I don't know for sure.
Hope you get him figured out soon! I know it's so hard watching them suffer!
i suspected a milk issue really early on, but the pedi convinced me it was "just" reflux and prescribed zantac. E would end up spitting up before, after, during - whenever I fed him the zantac, it would not stay down! it never came up his nose though, poor G!
i kept telling myself that a little bit in him was better than none, and the important thing is to be consistent, don't skip any doses. that said, you may want to ask about prevacid instead, since zantac doesn't work for everyone, and you have to keep up'ing the dosage as G grows. we never got there, so i don't know if that would stay down better. do you think he's vomiting b/c of the zantac? or that it's just coming up b/c he spits up a lot (this was the case with E)? as I'm sure you know, neither zantac nor prevacid will keep G from spitting up/vomiting though - it only neutralizes the stomach acid so the spitting up doesn't start to hurt over time.
all that said - I really felt like there was something else going on, and that amount of spit-up, even if E was a "happy spitter" after starting the zantac, was NOT NORMAL! even though he was gaining weight, no longer screaming during feeding, i just knew something had to be at the root of it. plus, i didn't want to have to give him meds for months on end if he didn't really need it. so i tried giving up dairy, for the second time - i already did before seeing the pedi, but went back on after she changed my mind.
you'll need to give up all sources of dairy if you really want to be sure - including whey, casein, and all the hidden sources. kellymom has a good list of hidden dairy, or also google "mspi" for more resources. i noticed *immediate* improvement within a week or so, but it takes 2-4 weeks to get all the milk proteins out of your system.
does G have any other symptoms of a milk sensitivity? mucous-y poops, rashes, anything like that? the biggest giveaway for me was that after a while, E's face would turn red every time he nursed, and his poops were super mucous-y. i never saw blood in his poop, though sometimes the blood is microscopic or looks like little bits of black pepper, so that's another thing to look for.
also, some large % of kids who can't tolerate milk proteins also can't tolerate soy. i cut all dairy out first, saw an improvement, then noticed that E would get worse from time to time, and was able to correlate it to soy, so i cut that too. and rinse and repeat - i've cut out a variety of other things too since then, that seem to bother him. it's still frustrating b/c sometimes he'll react and i have no idea what caused it!
if i were you, i would try cutting out all dairy for at least 2 weeks, and see if it helps. that amount of vomiting doesn't sound fun for either of you!
We're starting prevacid tomorrow.
G isn't really a spitter, it's "silent reflux", so not much spitting up but lots of pain, arching his back, stiff as a board, clenched fists and crying. It's horrible to watch!
(typing one handed while nrsing so we:ll see how good i am!)
I think the zantac was making him vomit because he has never really spit up much, more the silent reflux that i mentioned. so I'm hoping the prevacid won't cause the vomiting immediately after. I don't care if he spits up as long as he's not in pain. Some babies are "happy spitters" but from what I've read, the "silent reflux" (what g has) is the worst.
g doesn't have any symptoms of a milk allergy/sensitivity but i just wondered if it would help.
Today I called a lactation consultant, dietician and nutritionist at the hospital to see if they had any input. They ALL said it did NOT sounds like a milk allergy/sensitivity and that I would be "wasting" my resources cutting out milk/dairy. They did all give other suggestions, most of which I already tried. I spent 2 hours on the phone telling them his story... it was worth trying all of my resources to see.I even discussed a hindmilk/foremilk and fast let down with the LC. She thinks some of the reflux may get a little better when he takes a bottle bc he won't have the letdown to deal with, so we'll see if it helps once he starts daycare in 2 weeks. She said not to give him bottles when I'm with him bc it could affect my supply and that in time he'll learn to manage my letdown (she said maybe another month). The dietician and nutritionist said they weren't concerned with a milk protein issue,,, They both feel he needs the prevacid and they both said zantac doesn't work for lots of babies... so we"ll see!
