Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Question for reflux moms

DD was diagnosed with reflux at her 1 month appt. At that time, her pedi and I discussed it and decided against medicating her because she was gaining weight well and was only moderately fussy, so her pain level didn't seem too bad. Fast forward to now, she is still a moderately fussy baby and seems to be uncomfortable at times, but not terrible. Over the weekend I took her into the peds office (saw the NP, not our normal doctor) because she has had a cough that won't go away and her voice is very hoarse (no cold symptoms or anything like that). NP said she thought it was due to the reflux. Does anyone know if these symptoms are any indication of the severity of the reflux. If she is hoarse and has ongoing cough/congestion, does this increase the likelihood that there is damage being done by the reflux? I didn't really think of this question until I left the office and will put a call into the pedi tomorrow, but if this does indicate it is something that is to the point that we need meds, I don't want to keep holding it off. TIA!

Re: Question for reflux moms

  • the digestive fluid could be irritating her throat. :(

We are also trying to hold out on medication, my LO is a "happy spitter" and rarely shows signs it distresses her. I am thinking of starting some rice cereal/oatmeal next as that can sometimes help "weight it down" according to my pedi.

  • Our LO's voice is hoarse quite frequently because of her reflux. I haven't asked my pedi about it. But it doesn't seem to bother her. Although, we do give her meds. My baby is very fussy/hurting without meds. Also, my LO always seems congested, but I think it doesn't have anything to do with her meds or reflux. I think it is just the weather of my state and she might just have allergies.
  • At LO's first appointment I asked about the congestion and the pedi said it was probably just reflux. Fast forward to about a month ago, LO is diagnosed with reflux and given rice cereal because the pedi and I didn't wanna do medicine if we didn't have to. If LO isn't in pain I would say watch it close, but don't worry too much.

  • Poor little girl!  I?m not sure about meds, but have you or your doctor considered that her reflux-y symptoms (like congestion and pain) could be caused or made worse by a milk protein allergy?  To see if a milk protein allergy is the culprit I would recommend eliminating dairy from your LOs diet.  If you?re BFing you might want to try an elimination diet, eliminating both obvious dairy (like milk) and hidden dairy (like whey).  If you?re FFing you could talk to your ped about switching to a hydrolysate formula, like Nutramigen or Alimentum which still contain milk proteins just partially broken down, making them easier for babies with allergies to digest.  HTH and hang in there
