s/o grocery budget... milk $$?

Just out of curiosity, what does milk cost where you are?

Milk has gone up to $7 (4liter jug) here... organic milk is closer to $14 for the same size.

A half-gallon of organic whole milk is about $4, less on sale.  That's the only one I know, sorry!

  • Wow... milk here is somewhere around $3/gallon.

I would buy a cow if milk were $14! haha

  • I just paid $3.39 for a half gallon of organic (at the commissary... before a coupon).  The gallon size is... $6.29, I think.

  • I pay $6.59 for a gallon of milk that comes from a local dairy. It's not certified organic, but I trust the farmers.
  • Okay.  So now I am officially jealous of your milk prices.   I guess that's why my grocery bill is always so high!
  • Organic gallon is $8.

  • Our regular run of the mill store brand milk is often on sale for 3ish dollars a gallon. I can get (and just started to) grass fed milk from a local dairy that the grocery store carries for 3.49 a half gallon (they don't sell full gallons because they're in glass) but this is the only organic I've paid much attention to.

And I agree, I'd die if I had to pay $14 a gallon for milk!

What is the exchange rate between the US and CA? Ours might be expensive in Canadian $ too!

  • We don't buy cows milk - but the Blue Diamond Almond milk that we get is $3.59 for a 1/2 gallon. We go through a lot of it because DD & DH love it.

This. A 1/2 gallon is like almost $4 so it's worth it for us to get a gallon if and when we do. Usually I get my milk at Costco though. It's 3 -1/2 gallons for like $9 I think...  They only have whole or low fat so we get the low fat now.

  • In town I pay $4.29 for a gallon of non hormonal milk, organic is over $4 a half gallon.

Monkeyqueen, I know why BC residents come down to buy milk here now.  Ouch.

  • Local Organic Whole Milk:
    1 gallon [2 liters] = $6
    1/2 gallon [1 liter] = $4
    1/4 gallon [1/2 liter] = $2.50
    [Plus $1.50 for glass deposit]

    Organic Soy Milk:
    1/2 gallon [1 liter] = $3.50
    local 1/4 gallon = $7

I'm the only one that drinks it, so when I'm allowed to have dairy, I usually just buy a quart of non-homogenized local organic whole milk in a glass bottle for $2.50, and bring in my glass bottle from the previous week. But if I'm in a baking mood or making a cream-based soup, I'll buy the half gallon.

  • Store Brand Organic is $6/gallon

1/2 Gallon of Soy milk is $3.29

    Aldi's Whole Milk is $1.88/gallon.

I used to buy Organic but lately I've been going to Aldis b/c we really need to cut down our grocery bill.

  • Yikes on the $14 a gallon - that's insane!

I aim to pay $2.50/gallon for non-organic.  Organic tends to run around $5-6/gallon.  We bought only organic whole for DS for a year, but now drink regular skim.  It's one of the first things I'd like to switch when I get my next raise.

  • Thanks for all the replies!   It's interesting to know some of the cost differences!

I kind of hate watching extreme couponing, because it just seems like the same products are way less and our coupons all say "limit one per purchase."  We can't double up!  blah!

  • $4.99 for the store brand organic.

Our local dairy farm sells their milk (in bags) for 2.99/gal.  It's not organic, but pretty close.

Jealous - I'm guessing you don't live by me... :(

Organic store brand is $5.39, as I recall.  I don't remember the regular skim - $3.60 or so?
