I'm trying to decide if we want to use a pacifier or not with the baby. I have a friend who can't stand that her 2 year old won't give hers up, but other friends that said it was the only thing that soothed their babies. So, I'm torn. What are you doing?
Re: Will you be using a pacifier?
If my baby likes them, I am going to use it. I'm sure its not fun to take them away down the road, but several of my friends said they are lifesavers for the first year or so. I figure I can deal with a fussy 2 year old in 2 years
BFP #1 9/7/10, EDD 5/14/11, Violet born 5/27/11.
BFP #2 4/9/12, EDD 12/16/12, M/C Rory 4/24/12.
BFP #3 10/6/12, EDD 6/16/12., Matilda born 6/17/13.
I didn't plan on using one this soon- I was open to it though. But I never saw myself starting one until "breast feeding was well established"- which is what every nurse/pedi/MW/LC at the hospital suggested.
Well- on night one in the hospital I spent most of the night with LO sucking for dear life. The second night I spent with my hand twisted into the bassinet so he could suck on my finger.
When we got home, we tried a Soothie paci and lo and behold he was much more contented.
Also- b/c he used me a paci that one night and I, stupidly, allowed him to I now have nipples so raw his pedi prescribed a pump and told me not to breast feed till Saturday when she sees me again and just to pump.
So, I guess what I'm saying is just wait and see what your LO needs. Some babies are way more needy in the sucking for comfort than others.
(yikes- sorry that is so long!)

No, at least not yet.
We tried a pacifier but it must have been too early because Gabriella had nipple confusion. I tried to breastfeed and she made a face and wouldn't latch on. I was really worried and we had to practically force her to breastfeed again. Needless to say, we stopped using the pacifier.
I was undecided on if I was going to use them or not. I bought a couple of different ones just in case.
Last night DS was being fussy and we gave him one and he loved it. We haven't had any issues with nipple confusion yet... he still loves the boob more than anything. I figure if we use it occasionally it is not the end of the world and it makes him happy. Right now I just want to give my nipples a rest and keep my sanity. We are using the Nuk's brand ones.
Baby #2 on the way!
I was desperately trying for my baby to take one. No dice.
He likes to use his lungs I guess...
I went in with the philosophy of if my baby wants it she can have it. If she didn't like it then I wouldn't force her. She likes it. She doesn't want it all the time and I don't shove it in just because. I plan on weaning her at about 9 months. Maybe a year. Hopefully she will just stop taking it at that time since they can self soothe by then.
Babies need to suck. Something will probably be a paci for her. Boob, hand, thumb. I'm actually glad she wants the paci. I can get rid of a paci but not a thumb.

We gave it a shot after bf-ing was/is going great.
He's totally not interested. I guess I could try one of the orthodontic shaped ones, but maybe we'll just let it go if he doesn't want one.

I think the only reason I don't want to use one with DD #2 is because of all the side eyes I get from family and friends when they hear/see that DD #1 still uses one.
I'm not ready to take Addyson's away from her. She's just started to sleep really well, and it's really been a life saver with her!
I will see how things go with Avery. Right now, she's not interested in one at all, and gags when I try and give it to her. I'm not going to push her to take it, but if it becomes necessary, I'll gladly give her one too!
