Did you get rid of the pacifier at 18 months???

What method did you use? Cold turkey? Snipping the nipple off? Something different? I feel like DD is too young to understand the binky fairy or the "broken" pacifier, but too old for cold turkey. I'm looking for what's worked for other 18 month olds....or maybe I should wait until she's a little older.

Thoughts?

  • We got rid of the pacifier cold turkey at 1 year.  Just do it before your LO gets too old and its a big fight.  Good luck!!

  • Cold turkey worked at 15 months for my DD.. it was ALOT easier than expected.  My pedi recommended it before my new LO arrived..She told me that my DD would forget about it.. I didn't believe her, but she was totally right!   My DD didn't nap for a few days, but since she didn't nap, she was exhausted and went to bed without it FINE.... I was expecting a nightmare, but it was so EASY.  I got light blocking curtains to help with her naps during the day and she was FINE after that and napped by the third day.  You'll be SO GLAD you did.  I am.  Give your LO a "lovey" object.. like a blankie or something soft to cuddle.

  • Just before he turned 18 months we tried the "broken" pacifier method, but it just made him mad, so essentially he went pretty much cold turkey.  He was only using it for naps and bedtime, so it took us less than three days to get back into a normal routine without it.

  • We did it cold turkey around 15 months. It was a few tough days of napping and bedtime. I had to throw out the pacis so I wouldn't give in. He did get a lovey instead.

  • Thanks!!  I think the broken paci method would tick my DD off, too. Ugh. I'm not looking forward to this because she's SO in love with the thing!
  • I hear ya, I'm dreading getting rid of it.  We just had her 15 month check up today and pedi said he wasn't at all concerned about her keeping it longer.  She only has it for nap and bedtime.  So it's not interfering with her speech and he said the short amount of time they actually suck on it before it falls out during sleep would not mess up her teeth at all.  So, pretty much, I see no real rush to get rid of it.  I think by age 2 or 2.5 would be my limit, but I don't care if she wants to keep it for now.

    GL!

  • Tonight is the first night we put her down without her paci.  She has only been using it for naps and bedtime. So far so good...now I just need to make sure I hide all of them so my MIL can't find them.  I want DD to forgot all about pacis before #2 gets here and before it becomes a fight to take them away.

  • we barely use them, he doesn't like using them when he sleeps, its more of a comfort thing and something to keep him busy in the car so he's not screaming! Right now he's using it alot b/c he's teething again so the sucking is comforting but normally he'll go days without one so I'm not worried.
  • We got rid of DD1's when she was 3. Her dentist wanted it gone by age 4 and I was pregnant at the time and didn't want to worry about her stealing the baby's nuks. I had only allowed it for naps and bedtime as it was. She was old enough to understand the nuk fairy. We sent them away to the fairy for another baby to use and when she woke up she got a toy. She did great! I will say that her naps pretty much ended at that point though :( I am not one to rush things and feel all things will end when they are ready.
