Bf question

So I was Bf and would sometimes give Lo a bottle when he was with my husband or a sitter. For the past month or so I have also had to supplement with expressed milk after feeding because he is still hungry. This is so upsetting for me because he gets so upset. So today I've been pumping only and giving him bottles of expressed milk and I'll Bf him over night and his first morning feeding. Is anyone else pretty much just pumping and giving expressed milk. I like it better because I know how much he is getting. I'm just nervous that I will run low on my supply. Anyone try this? And were you successful?

Re: Bf question

  • Just curious, if he's completely emptying one side, you could switch to the other during the same feeding. Or you could try doing compressions while he's feeding to help him along and to get him more hind milk which would be more filling for him.  He needs to nurse long enough to get the hind milk, otherwise he will be filling up on foremilk which will make him hungry a lot sooner.  Sometimes my LO will nurse for a short time, but other times he's there for a good 45 minutes, and that's okay. I guess you just need to make the time to do it. Good luck!

edit: you could also post this on the breastfeeding board on thebump, they are usually pretty helpful over there :)

  • I had mastitis and my LO got trush. She stopped wanting my breast and would scream when I tried to feed her. I now have to pump and feed her with a bottle. It really stinks, but its working. She is gaining weight and I haven't had to supplement formula. Your supply shouldn't go down if you keep pumping. I bought a liquid supplement from Whole Foods that I take once a day just to make sure my supply doesn't go down. I don't need to take it, but I'm a worrier so I go.
  • I exclusively pumped for 6 weeks and hated it.  I am in the process of weaning myself and giving LO formula bc she wouldn't latch.

Just curious, but what are you taking?

OP- I've been pumping for a few weeks, but mostly because I had a blister and it won't heal properly and my LO kept ingesting blood. Pumping is a pain, especially in the middle of the night and I worry about my supply not being able to meet his needs.

As PP said, when your LO is on the breast do compressions and help "push" out that extra hind milk. When I did have LO on the breast, I had to put him on both sides to ensure that he was fulfilled. My left on is kind of a dud and he doesn't get as much from it.

  • I'm taking Motherlove "more milk plus" is what is says on the bottle. I know you can get it in tea form, but my doctor said this is more potent and works faster. It definitely works!!! It tastes terrible so I put it in orange juice, and then it isn't too bad. It was $20ish, which is expensive, but a lot less than buying formula every week!
  • I like knowing what LO is eating as well and I pretty much do the same thing as you. I nurse the last feeding before bed so he gets all tucker out, I nurse in the middle of the night and if I have time I will nurse in the morning. All the rest of the feedings are bottled. I have been worrying from the beginning if my supply would run low, but so far things are going well. I just try to get in 5-6 pumping a day and usually get around 2 feedings from each pumping session. If I run short on one then I will pump after I BF to fully empty everything and make up another feeding.

For instance: 9am pump I get 5oz (perfect for 2 feedings), 12pm pumping I only get 4oz so then after I nurse at 10pm I will pump to try and get that other oz.
