How long does this last?

My shower was today and I got a ton of lovely gifts. I did get quite a few multiples of things so returning and exhanging is in my future. I have a couple questions.

1) What is the difference between the different types of Desitin? I have the blue kind, the purple kind and the yellow kind. All I can tell is that the names are different but they seem to have the same ingredients and I have about 7 tubes of it. Anyone have any preference?

2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items.

3) How often should I realistically expect these things to last? I am really strange about clutter and doubles and would almost rather just go buy things than have multiple backups for long peroids of time. How often do you use baby lotion? Every day? I would imagine even I were to use it every day on such a tiny person a 14oz bottle of lotion would last for quite awhile?

Sorry ladies. First timer here overanalyzing things and trying to get things organized. Thanks for any help!

Anyone have any preference?  For us, desitin did nothing.  Boudreaux's Butt paste is far better, IMHO.  But, every baby is differnet.

    2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items.  I'd keep one bottle of baby oil.  It did help us with cradle cap.  1-2 bottles of Aquaphor is plenty to start with...  if you wind up using it, then go get more.  As for lotion, Aveeno Baby Lotion (dark blue cap) is hands down the best we found for us.  Again, every kid is different, but I would take the other stuff back and get what you need.  Buying a bottle of something you need down the road isn't a big deal when they cost ~$5/bottle... maybe $10 at the most.

They last about as long as any other bottles of lotion... it really depends on how much you use.  Baby lotion is the one thing we definitely needed- but like you said, you don't need tons of it.  Every baby is so different, but you're right- you don't need tons of it.

  • I honestly didn't use baby oil, but everyone is different.  We also had no issues with diaper rash with B, so we never used Desitin.  I've used it a few times with A.

As for lotion, I use it a little in the newborn stage, but like you said, they're so little that you don't use a ton of it.  Once I started a solid bedtime routine, I used it every night, because lotion/massage was part of the routine right before PJs.  If it makes you crazy to have too many bottles hanging around, you could always return all but two or so and go get more when you need it.  Like PP said, everyone is different!

Seriously a huge amount of baby butt cream going on over here.

There is a ton of that too and I'm super sensative to lotions and can only use very particular ones so if her skin is anything like mine than we might have to do some searching to find the right kind.

  • We've never used Desitin - only Buttpaste - and we love Buttpaste.

Also, we've never used baby oil. I had some and threw it out.

As far as lotion, I second what PP said the only thing that's worked for us is Aveeno Baby. I'd definitely return anything that's heavily scented. I use it almost every day but we're still on the first couple of bottles. No need to have a million of them laying around.

Anyone have any preference?  I didn't know there was a "yellow" kind, but the difference between the purple and blue is one is more of a "overnight thicker cream" the other is supposed to be a quick relief and is more creamy.  I have used both of those and don't have a preference.  I also use aquaphor or corn starch works wonders as well

    2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items. I never used baby oil with DS, but I did use it with DD for her cradle cap, but that is the only time so having multiple bottles won't be useful.

    3) How often should I realistically expect these things to last? I would imagine even I were to use it every day on such a tiny person a 14oz bottle of lotion would last for quite awhile?  I use lotion frequently with DD because of her eczema, but I use Eucrein Creme and not regular lotion because they say creme is better for it.  I had tons of lotion when I had DS because I thought I would need/use it....I never did.

  • We only use Aquaphor for diaper rash and as a lotion.  In the winter, we used lotion every night.  Now that it is warmer though, we don't use it as often.  We have a giant tub of Aquaphor that's lasted a few months now.  I personally would return all the Desitin.  We used a tiny bit of baby oil when DS was really little but that's it.  I'd just keep one bottle.

All I can tell is that the names are different but they seem to have the same ingredients and I have about 7 tubes of it. Anyone have any preference? We have used both Desitin and Butt Paste and honestly, I didn't have a preference.  DD didn't have many diaper rashes but putting either one of those on her at the first sign of redness usually took care of it.  When she had the stomach flu, she got a really bad diaper rash and nothing was working.  I called the pedi office and they asked what color tube of Desitin I had tried.  I had only tried blue (creamy), so she recommended getting the purple tube.  It was a lot thicker and cleared it up in a day.

    2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items.

I still have an unopened bottle of baby oil sitting in DD's closet.  We never used it, but she didn't have cradle cap.  I put lotion on her after every bath and if I notice her skin looks dry.  I've only used Aveeno and Johnson's baby lotion (because that's what I had received at my showers.)  Both worked well and I don't have a preference.

I kept about 5 tubes of desitin/butt paste, 5 bottles of baby wash/shampoo, 1 bottle of baby oil and 3 large bottles of baby lotion from my showers.   I've only had to buy one tube of desitin (the purple one),1 bottle of baby shampoo and my first bottle of baby lotion is on my grocery list for this week.  Because she didn't take as many baths in her first year as she takes now, the shampoo/wash/lotion lasted a lot longer.   HTH!

  • We've used all the different Desitin's and unless DD had really bad diaper rash, it didn't matter which one.  We did go through a lot though when she had problems.  The strongest one (purple I think) worked best of all of them for when her diaper rash was pretty bad, it is the thickest and dried out the rash the best.

We never used baby oil and I can't stand the smell of it.  I threw out all that we got.  For lotion, we either use the Aveeno in the dark blue cap or Mustella.  Aquaphor worked really well when her skin was super dry and she got a bit of eczema.

I only ever had the blue, but I would have used the others had we been given them, because I really don't think there's much difference between the 3 kinds.

    2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items.

I have no idea what the baby oil is for, we got some and never used it.

I also got eleventy billion bottles of baby lotion and baby wash at my shower.  By the time he was 1 year old we had not even made it through 1 whole bottle of either one.  I would probably keep most (if not all) of the diaper cream, though.  That is something we did go through a lot of.  Plus, we had a tube upstairs, one downstairs, one in the diaper bag, etc.

All I can tell is that the names are different but they seem to have the same ingredients and I have about 7 tubes of it. Anyone have any preference? I have never tried Desitin so I can't give any reviews on that-- we have only used aquaphor or buttpaste and both work pretty well for the handful of diaper rashes N has had. We have the same 1 tube of buttpaste that I got at my shower, it is about 1/2-3/4 used and I bought a tub of aquaphor rather than the tubes and we've barely made a dent since I didnt buy it until DS was like 6 months.

    2) What is baby oil used for exactly? How is it different than regular baby lotion and aquafer? I have about 15 different bottles of these three items. We never used baby oil-- DS had cradle cap but I just used olive oil since I was bathing him in the kitchen sink and it was closer haha As for baby lotion we just have the traditional pink j & j lotion and we rarely use it. DS has never had dry skin, even in winter, so when we DO put lotion on its more for me to try and calm him down or just pamper him a little bit after a diaper change.

In my view everything lasts pretty long. We are just finishing up a large bottle of Mustela baby shampoo/wash that I got at my shower. If you are only using a pea sized amount it lasts a LONG time. I would keep maybe 2 of each (2 shampoos, 2 lotions, 2 diaper creams) that way you have a back up for when you run out, it wont take up too much room and it will last you until your LO is probably 3 haha

  • We used Aquaphor for diaper rash and it worked amazing. We used Desitin only a couple times.

We didn't go through more than 2 bottles of baby lotion in a year. The babies are so small and even if you use it every bath, it will last a long long time.

We got a bottle of baby oil. I have heard it is good for cradle cap but luckily, DD never had any. It is still unused.

We only ever use Aveeno diaper rash cream, so I'm no help there.  And we never used baby lotion....just aquaphor as lotion.  I still use it on DS in the winter and here and there in warmer weather.  I had a mini bottle of baby oil for DS and never used it.  The pedi recommended using a bit for DD's cradle cap.  If it were me I would keep all the aquaphor (that stuff's expensive!) and one small bottle of baby oil, and probably all the diaper rash cream (1 upstairs, 1 downstairs, 1 for sitter, 1 for diaper bag, etc) and take the rest back.

  • We never used Desitin - just aquaphor and resitol (otc from the pharmacy) for a bad rash.  Audrey has really dry, sensitive skin.  I used California Baby at first.  Now, we use Cetaphil.  Aveeno and Johnson's made her break out - even the unscented versions.  We use California Baby, Burts Bees, or Say Yes to Carrots body washes and shampoo.  We go through a bottle of lotion/wash every other month.

Each night, we slather her with lotion, so we use much more than most.  If we don't, she gets dry, itchy bumps everywhere.  I would be careful with Johnson and Johnson's products, which include Aveeno.  They have a lot of harsh chemicals in them and scored poorly.
