anyones kid considered overweight besides mine?!

i took t to the pedi urgent care center last night b/c i found a lump next to his ankle (thats a whole other story but the fluid may need to be drained - fun times!) and when i was getting ready to leave the on-call dr pulled out this sheet and said he wanted to talk about bmi and yada yada yada.

he said based on t's height and weight (41 inches and 42 lbs) he is considered overweight. i started to laugh when i realized he was serious! WTF! this lanky kid who is the most athletic 3 year old is considered overweight? he told me that we need to watch sweet/starchy intake and i politely informed him that t's favorite snacks are fruits/veggies, he doesnt eat fast food, and we dont have juice in our house.

i was kinda blown away by the whole thing! anyone else been told their kid is overweight? is this something your pedi discusses at visits? just curious.

Re: anyones kid considered overweight besides mine?!

  • My kids are both on the lower end of the charts so I haven't had this discussion.  BUT I'd be inclined to blow this doc off if your pedi hasn't mentioned anything to you.  Did this doc have T's entire medical file, or was he just going on that one visit.  Does he know what % T ususally falls into, was he looking at growth charts.

I think if your pedi was concerned he'd bring it up, but some kids are just always at the higher end of the spectrum, and as long as he's healthy and active and not sitting around eating candy all day, you're fine.

  • ya my husband totally blew it off - but then i started to think more about it. it was just a dr at the urgent care and not his normal pedi - but he was 9.3 when he was born and is typically around 90-100% for height and weight.

to be honest - i didnt realize they even look for things like this at such a young age. and i was even more blown away since this kid really has no fat on his body!

  • at our 3 year check up mine was 38 inches and 36 pounds. similar proportions and our pedi said he looked fine.

  • Lucas has always been in the 90th-95th percentile for both height and weight.  His pediatrician has commented that he's perfectly in proportion and it's not a concern that his weight is at the higher percentile because his height is as well.

I'd dismiss what that doctor said and if you're still concerned maybe email his pediatrician to see what he/she thinks.

  • I would call his regular doctor and ask about it. His BMI Body mass index (which calculates the weight in proportion to the height)  from what you wrote and his age does fall into the 92%ile which is technically in the overweight range, but BMI is not the very best measurement of body fat because if you are stocky or muscular you will also have a high BMI so it is hard to say without knowing him. If you think he is eating a healthy diet and is very active then he is probably fine. I never comment on weight at urgent care visits, I feel it is totally inappropriate to initiate that conversation with a family I am unfamiliar with, when their child clearly has a more pressing issue.

  • Mine is and our Pedi has discussed it with us.  Granted she is 95%+ for height and 100% for weight.  Since her Dr appt her weight has stabilized but she is still growing.  I'm concerned but not overly concerned because she doesn't look overweight and she is slimming down.

  • That's weird...my daughter has the SAME exact measurements from her 4 year old check up back in November (I had to look it up because the numbers looked familiar to me)  she was 42lbs at 42 inches.  90% for weight (with clothes on) and 88% for height.  Her BMI is 87%.  Her doctor has never said anything about her weight.  She's been in the 90th percentile her whole life for height and weight and the only time her doctor mentioned something was when we were transitioning her to milk he said don't do whole milk, do 2% because she's a healthy weight.  Other than that I'm not concerned at all and like I said no one has ever said anything to us.

    WTF on call doctor?!
  • I also have a big kid, usually in 90% for height, 70-80% for weight. My niece is similar as is her brother and their pedi DID make a big deal about it and upset SIL, but my brother is 6'3" and SIL is 5'10". So big is normal for them. Our pedi just figures DS is going to be a big kid and never asks or advises us on his diet even when we express cocern that he doesn't eat much. He does get juice (periodically like today), sweet, and fast food. By he's such a picky bird like eater he doesn't actually consume that much even when allowed junk food. I'd ask pedi next time and compare it to his overall stats before stressing.
  • That is really weird.  I wouldn't give it a second thought.  C has always been a big kid too, but he's height/weight proportionate for the most part and we're not concerned.  His pedi has never mentioned anything to us.

Good luck with the drain thing!  I hope Tyler is okay!

  • Darrian is the same numbers and a Dr. we met with (not our regular) mentioned it. I thought they did because I am honestly, because D is very active and doesn't look overweight. His Dr. Says he's fine, healthy, tall.. And that he has hovered at the same ratio for over a year. You know your son, if you think he's ok I am sure he is. If your really concerned maybe ask his regular pedi his thoughts.
  • I get comments like that from strangers all the time. In fact one day I went home crying hysterically about it. I made my daughter an appointment with the Pedi, and they said she is fine. She is 43 inches all ( so just about 3 feet and some and some change) she weighs 36lbs and her doctor said she is fine for her height. infact she a little under wiehgt, she eats healthy and gets plenty of exercise but she is really tall. I would obased on what your regular pedi says not an ER doctor.

Andrew is very similar, I think he's 42 and 42.5 and his ped has never said anything.  The funny thing to me is Andrew has never been a good eater, has always eaten very little to the point that no one around here blinks an eye if he doesn't eat anything all day.  He's always been heavy for his height.

Now Cooper, he's always been a total porker.  The kid will eat anything that isn't nailed down, and at almost every meal puts away more food than even DH.  If you have food of any kind the kid can be in the other room and immediately he's in your lap with his mouth open.  Now he's 97% of height yet only 25% for weight.

Having two boys it's so obviously genetics to me.  They are just built differently and I'm sure Cooper will be a tall string bean and Andrew is going to be built like a tank.
