Questions: Storing pump parts in the fridge? / Storage Guidelines

So, now for my first questions as a second time around mom. Do I remember reading from this board that you don't have to wash your pump parts after every use and that you can store them in the fridge between pumping sessions? For example, if I pump three times a day, can I just put the parts in the fridge after each time and then wash them once at night?

ETA: One more question. I was reading about storage guidelines on Kelly Mom and it says the following: "If baby does not finish milk at one feeding, it may be refrigerated and offered at the next feeding before it is discarded." I always thought that if they didn't finish it within an hour that you had to discard it and that's also what the Ameda website says. So, what do you all do if they don't finish a bottle of BM?

Here's the URL that has that sentence. It's at the very bottom of hte page.

  • Yes to storing parts in the fridge--highly recommend it, especially when you are pumping a lot during the day.  (also great if you can get a second set of parts--helps when you can't refrigerate).

And yes to offering milk that is left over from the last feeding and highly advisable if the LO is getting used to a bottle and you're getting used to figuring out how much BM she'll take at one feeding.  Otherwise you can end up wasting a lot of milk.

  • yes, that's what I do w/ storing pump parts.

I think the 1-hr rule is for formula

I NEVER EVER throw away BM. Are you kidding me? If LO does not drink it all at once, I keep re-offering at the next feeding until it's gone. I've never had a problem and I did that with DD for 14mo and am still doing that with DS, who's almost 1.

  • I would always just rinse my parts (when I was pumping at work) and that worked fine too.

Definitely keep offering the milk. No way would I throw that stuff out. I think the rule maybe applies to formula? I know you can't reuse that once they've had any.

  • Our peditrician told us 2 hours for BM if not finished. We did small bottles at first until we knew how much she would eat.
  • Another for yes to both.  I think on Kelly Mom it says you can reoffer it up to 8 hours.

However, we put that bottle back in the fridge and will use it within the next 12 (like the next morning because it usually happens with a bedtime bottle).  We only toss the milk if it was chilled and got left out (like the time I forgot to put my milk in the fridge after work...) and it obviously smelled bad.

  • Thank you ladies! This is good news :-)

Yes, I hate the idea of throwing out BM but I couldn't remember the rules.

  • Yes to both questions.  When pumping at work I stuff my pump parts and bottles in the cooler with my bag(s) of milk and shove it all in the fride.  Then I (DH!!) only have to wash one set of parts and one set of bottles each day.  As for the one hour rule - it's required by the state for DCP that the bottles be used within one hour.  At home, though we rarely use bottles, we follow the "finish at the next feeding" rule.  My DCP will save the milk DD2 doesn't finish in the off chance that I want to feed it to her at home.  Glad BFing seems to be working out the second time around.
  • The pump parts all day long in the fridge I agree with.

My local LLL chapter gives more conservative advice on re-offering a bottle. But, there isn't a hard rule because it hasn't been studied that much. Essentially, consider what all the milk had been through...let's say you pumped and forgot it and let it sit for 3 hours, then froze it, then had it defrosted in the fridge overnight, then warmed the milk because LO doesn't like it cold. While individually each one of those things are totally fine, added up it may be pushing it to reoffer that bottle. But, if it is freshly pumped milk or another scenario with less of a saga behind it, I'd be fine with reoffering within a couple of hours (though I probably wouldn't rewarm the bottle).

  • Oh, and congrats! I thought the second time around was much easier too.  Of course, I was in a similar situation as yours - DD1 went to DC, while I stayed home on ML.  So awesome to have that time with DD2.  It was a luxury I wish all moms with multiple kids could have.
  • yes to both... however the thought of putting ice cold plastic on my boobs made me cringe so i personally just quick rinse the parts in hot water right after my pumping and let them air dry before my next session. i've been fine doing that over 5 months of pumping.

the thing about not offering it again is formula. BM you can offer at the next feeding though i've heard time constraints on that too (anywhere from 2-4 hours later). i always just smell it first because i'm not going to waste that stuff! :)
