Daycare woes!

Arrrgh!!!  I've been putting off the daycare search because my friend recommended hers so highly and said that her daycare lady *always* has openings for infants.  I called her tonight and she doesn't have openings for infants for August, because three of her current parents are pregnant!

We're pretty sure we want to go the home daycare route now (we already have a center picked out if we decide to go for a center, but it's just sooo much more expensive).  So if you have a good in-home daycare in San Jose that you can recommend, please let me know!

In the meantime, it's back to the 4C website for me...

Re: Daycare woes!

  • Bummer! We found our home daycare through the 4C, and we were happy for the most part. They could be a great resource for you too.One thing I wanted to point out though is that the cost for in-home might not be as drastic as you think when compared to a center. Our center is about 130 more per month over our old in-home. Granted that ammount can be a deal breaker for some families' budgets, but to me the cost differential isn't drastically off and we are SO much happier at the center.Good luck with your search. It's difficult for sure.

  • Can you call the lady back and ask about a waiting list? Just because someone is pregnant doesn't 100% mean that they will end up using daycare. Some women choose not to go back to work after the second because of the cost, their financial situation changes, etc.

Every daycare center that we put our name in that said that they didn't have an opening... we'd put our name on a waiting list. More often than not, we'd get a call back. It doesn't hurt to have more than one potential option.

Yes, that's good advice.  She asked me to call back on Monday during her regular daycare hours so she could get my info.  She really likes the parent who is a friend of mine, and said she would let me know if anything opened up.

Ava, I'm sure you're right about the cost difference, in some cases.  For us, the center we really like is $340/week, and this daycare is $200/week.  So the difference is $140/week, which is $560/month!

  • It's not an in home day care but I'm pretty sure we are going with The Discovery Years in San jose on Lincoln. They have openings ight now. It was the first place that didn't freak me out when I walked in. I got a really good feeling when I met with them. There are not a lot of places who take infants. I would be interested to see the places you have looked at so far.
