1st Trimester

8 weeks and Allergies

Wondering if anyone is taking allergy medication at 8 weeks that is ok. Between morning sickness and allergies, I can't take it no more. Went to Walgreen and brought Clairtin and checked with doctor today. doctor said no to clairtin. only benadryl which i have used in past and doesn't work.

Re: 8 weeks and Allergies

  • I'm taking Xyzal (basicallt its prescription strength zyrtec) and its pregnancy catagory B, so pretty darn safe, but it's always best to check with your doc first.  I know mine said its better if I can take nothing but not worth it if I'm going to be completely miserable.  Good luck!

  • have you every tried using a neti pot?  it is basically a sinus rinse that uses a salt water combination to drain the sinuses and reduce inflammation.  you can get it at almost any pharmacy.  many of them come with a packet of solution you mix with warm water but if you aren't sure about what's in the solution just mix your own salt water combination and use that.  it is a short term relieve but continued use will help you heal faster.
  • My allergies are a nightmare. My doc said Zyrtec is ok after 1st trimester. I and hesitant to take anything even if the doc says ok. I got one of those saline nasal misters and then help. and a hot shower helps too. Plus driving with the windows up lessen my symptoms

  • My Dr. said zyrtec is okay for me to take now.  That being said I haven't took anything for these darn allergies.

  • My doctor said zyrtec is okay if you need it.  I asked her and she's like - You have to breath!  Also look at the netipot and saline spray like others suggest and eye drops.  My PCP gave me a prescription eye drop (Pataday) that works wonders.

  • My doc said Claritin is ok.  And Zyrtec.  Now I am wondering about Claritin...

  • My dr told me to to avoid any allergy meds for now if I could and stick to saline. Add the allergies to the m/s and I am miserable today!

  • Dr. recommended zyrtex, but pharmacist said "he wouldn't let his wife take any thing during the first trimester". With that I decided to suffer.

  • I decided to suffer through it but once I hit 12 weeks, I just couldn't take it anymore.  I feel like I am begining to develop a cold or respiratory infection from not taking care of these allergies.  I'd rather take Zyrtec (which my doctor approved) than have to take an antibiotic because my immune system is so beaten up.  It basically came down to the lesser of 2 evils.  So I am taking the Zyrec temporarily until I feel better.

Good luck and I hope you feel better!

This!  So much better to try this first than to use meds.  I have horrible allergies and my OB said no to any meds during the 1st trimester.  She also said that Clariton would be better than Zyrtec once I'm in my 2nd trimester since Clariton has about around so much longer than Zyrtec so they have more of an idea of long term effects.  GL!
