Recommend your Birth Control

In March I stopped taking BCPs and started charting and using the FAM method to avoid because the BCPs were totally killing my sex drive.  Overall I feel pretty good but my desire has yet to come back.   I feel like its getting better - but not like it used to be.  Heres the thing - DH and I both have crazy baby fever, but are waiting until next year to TTC due to his new business.  I'm a little nervous that between our baby fever and the heat of the moment we'll have an oops while relying on condoms during the fertile phase.  I'd feel much more comfortable having a back up method (he also agrees).

I'm wondering if you could recommend your birth control (pill, patch, ring, whatever).

I'm also wondering if you think generic vs. brand name makes a difference.  When I started taking BCPs I started on Ortho Tri Cyclen and I loved it, It cleared my mild acne up, and I had no negative side effects.  When they came out with a generic I always requested name brand only (I'm a weirdo like that).  Sometime within the past 2 years I got my Rx fillled and the pharmacy gave me generic - I didnt realize until  I got home and just decided to take it - because it was cheaper, and we were saving for our wedding at that point I decided to continue on the generic - I'm wondering if the generic was the issue since I was on OTC brand name for almost 8 years with no issues.

Sorry for the SUPER long post but any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated :)

  • I used the nuva Ring and I loved it- I had no problem with sex drive or crazy mood swings while using it...

  • Most BCP have affected my sex drive and also make me more moody.  My favorite form of BC so far has been the Mirena IUD.  I also really liked the Nuvaring but if you're not planning on more kids for a while Mirena makes more sense.  It was only a $50 copay to insert and lasts 3 years (I believe, maybe longer).  My nuva ring was $42 a month and although pretty low maintence, you can't beat doing nothing and also not having periods.

  • I am on LoEstrin and I'm very happy with it! I actually switched to this because (generic) Ortho Tri gave me bad mood swings. My OB and I discussed it and he told me that LoEstrin is much less likely to give me mood swings because it's 1 constant dose throughout the month, unlike the 3 different doses per week with many BCPs.

I've been on it for almost a year now and it's great. Big time bonus, my periods are extremely light on it! I mean, so light that I use a liner maybe 2 days and then those super thin thong liners another 2 days and that's it. It's great.

TTC since 8/13 - diagnosed difficulty conceiving due to LP defect. Took vitamin B and Vitex Berry to help lengthen.

  • My BC is NFP. Real NFP is as effective as most other hormonal BC without the side effects.

Of course if you don't follow it well....well...

  • I take Ovcon35 birth control pills. I refuse to take the generic.  I will gladly pay for the name brand.  I have never had any side effects on the name brand so I am unwillingly to change something that I know works for me.

I took LoEstrin for a few months (four I think) after going off the mini pill when I stopped bf'ing. I definitely agree about the super light periods- but I spotted A LOT between cycles while adjusting to being on it, which may have been more post-partum related than pill related.

Have you talked to you doctor at all about any of this? From what I understand I think a decreased sex drive is a possible side effect to most BCPs. I could be mistaken.

Ya, I did spot a lot for about the first 6 months of being on it. I'd pretty much spot for a week every other week (since AF was basically just spotting, it was like 1 week on, 1 week off... then some months no AF at all, then back to spotting). But it finally evened out thankfully!

I have noticed a decrease in sex drive...but I also started taking Zoloft and I think it's more from that then the BCP...it started about a month after starting Zoloft and I was on LoEstrin for about 6 months before that. I didn't talk to my OB about it though.

  • my wife and I used the "crap it out" method where she would run to the bathroom afterward and expel the seed. I dont recommend it. we have a 6 month old now and she is using the paraguard. Loves it so far, no abnormal cramping.

This.  I loved Nuva Ring.  My body really doesn't respond well to hormones but this one really didn't give me any problems.  I also had an IUD, Paragard with no hormones, which I really liked.

Is that the technical term? Wink

This made me LOL - I'd probably go with the pull out method before this, but even that makes me nervous.  I'm going to talk to my doctor about whether she would recommend the nuvaring, or going back on the pill - I figure its just a year, so I'll stick it out.  All this worrying about possibly getting pregnant while not being on the pill hasnt helped my sex drive either.
