Average delivery cost?

Do any moms remember seeing how much your insurance was billed for your delivery?  I know this can vary widely and I'm sorry to ask a money/personal question.

DH's work has decided to switch insurance providers 1/1/09.  Great timing :(  With our current insurance we have 100% coverage and were told this summer that we'd still be covered under that plan through Jan, but found out tonight that we won't be.  We'll be paying 20% of about half of what the new insurance company is billed.

I'm stressed and would like to have some idea in mind of how much this could cost us.

Thanks!

Re: Average delivery cost?

  • Mine was $4000-4500 for a vaginal delivery w/ 2 day hospital stay.  Don't forget that you'll have hospital costs for baby too that are separate from that.  I'll see if I can figure out how much those were for us.

  • DS's hospital bills were ~$1200.  Delivery costs were $4400.  Interestingly enough I was admitted for a few hours the day before he was born and that was $3300.  Ridiculous compared to the cost of delivering and my hospital stay!

  • Here is a c section for ya!  I don't want to scare you but if I remember correctly the hospital bill for just me was about 16500.00 before insurance and for natalie it was around 3500.00.  I was induced on a Thursday night, delivered Saturday night and came home that Tuesday I believe.  We ended up paying around 2500 out of pocket.
  • I was induced and was in for two days then I had a c section and mine was 23,000 and my bills for my son were around 5000.
  • My bill was outrageous but that also included almost 3 weeks in the NICU.

It was 125,000...that's times 2 plus 3 weeks in the NICU.

The 3 weeks in the NICU was 86K  Yep wow!  Thank god for good health insurance.

We only had to pay the first $700.

I just went in to my health insurance...my stay from May 31 - to June 2 was $9300...so that's average stay w/ vaginal delivery cost in NJ at a top quality hospital.

  • I believe mine was about $9,000 for a vaginal delivery and a two day stay in the hospital.  I had an epi also.

    I had an epi also.

I didn't have an epi, don't know what cost that adds.

I had an epi as well.

  • Vaginal birth and one night stay in the hospital was $3138.50.  Anesthesia was $504.    Sierra's bill was $291.
  • Our original total was about $25,000 for an induction and c-section for everything including drugs, Amelia's stuff, etc. Insurance negotiated those numbers WAY down, though, when I saw the bills, so that will definitely help you in paying a percentage. Also, is your percentage on top of your deductible or up to your deductible? I think ours was $4,000 max out of pocket for the whole family(I can't remember entirely because our coverage has changed since then), so once we hit that we didn't have to pay more or certain percentages, etc. We set up or FSA at the max contribution for the year and used that to pay most of it, which was nice because it's money that's before taxes. So, it came out of DH's paycheck for the year, but only a little at a time and we only had to have one other lump sum to pay the bills - it made a huge difference, so I'd say to sign up for that if you have the option because between hospital bills and doctor co-pays and payments of percentages of costs on well baby checkups and immunizations, you'll easily hit the max that first year.
  • Thanks ladies.  I appreciate your willingness to share your experiences.  It looks like, depending on how I deliver, that we may reach our out of pocket max for the year right away.  We are choosing a plan with no deductable so that should help some.  All of this has come as a surprise since I thought we'd be paying $0 for delivery.  We kept saying "We paid so much for infertility treatments...it will be nice not to have a huge bill for delivery".  Guess not, but at least we have insurance.  Thanks again!

  • I'm a little late with this, but here is ours.  This was for a vaginal birth, no induction, but antibiotics, IV pain meds, and epi.

    Pediatrician visits in hospital: $218
    Tori: $1098.00
Me: $2500 from OB, $3178 for hospital stay (admitted Saturday, left Tuesday), $437.21 from the Anesthesia group (includes epi)

  • I had a vaginal delivery, epidural, private room for two days.  We also had a neonatal team come in because there was meconium when they broke my water.

My insurance was billed arounf $15k for both of us.  I have a feeling that included my prenatal care though, because I never saw anything come in for that.

  • My bill for Raymond was almost $3600.  I was stunned by this since I was only in for 24 hours and I of course didn't have the costs to take care of a newborn, and I didn't have alot of the normal costs for delivery.  I thought it would be much lower because of that.  I did have an epidural though.
  • Thanks for sharing, ladies.  This is great information, especially since it's the time of year to pick insurance.

  • My bill for Madeleine was around $5600 for a vaginal delivery with an epidural.  Madeleine's bill was around $1000, I think.  For Eloise, my bill came to $18,000, and Eloise's care was another $1500 or so.
  • For both of us, it was about $10K for a vaginal delivery, no epi, and a routine hospital stay for both of us.  We were there from 11:00pm Sat. night to Tuesday morning, but they all counted as full days so that made it more.
