Pregnant after a Loss

Nursery remodel- need flooring suggestions!

Hi lovely ladies. I need a flooring recommendation for our nursery remodel: we are ripping out all of the walls and floors and I'm noticing that a lot of ladies have a carpeted nursery.

I've been resistant to carpeting because we don't have it anywhere else in our house, and with two dogs it would have to be vacuumed constantly. But I'm realizing that maybe hardwood isn't the safest/best option for an infant or toddler. Thoughts?

The whole idea of actually making a decision kind of makes me sick to my stomach, but the remodel needs to happen pretty soon. Any suggestions you have would be most appreciated!

  • I think if you wanted to do hardwood floors that would be fine but I would definitely put a rug in there

I am a hardwood floor lover!! With that said when we moves into our new house the upstairs was carpeted and we are very happy about it now. The dogs walking around isn't as obvious and the nursery floor is a little more tummytime friendly. You could always put down hardwood and invest in a nice area rug though??

Thanks so much ladies! I was starting to worry that I was the odd man out wanting to put hardwood down. The rest of our house (except the bathroom) is all hardwood so it seemed nicest to put down hardwood and an area rug, but then I worried that it wouldn't be kid friendly enough. I am just finding the whole process really overwhelming.

  • I probably wouldn't install carpet if it is nowhere else in the house.  You wouldn't necessarily need a big area rug either, at least not right away.  Whenever I would play with DS in his room, I'd have him on a baby mat or quilt anyway, so you could get by with small throws if you're looking for extra padding.  Even now, my son really only sleeps, dresses, does diapers and quite activities in his room (like reading), so I never really think about what kind of floor is in there.  Good luck with yoru renovation project!

  • We have a old house with hardwood floors and just plan to put a little larger size rug in the room.  I also have a dog and the hardwood floor works well for us.  GL

  • A rug would make it softer for a new crawler but hardwood is cleaner to me. I feel like carpet keeps all kinds of dust and gross stuff. We have carpet throughotu our house wtih hardwood in only a few places. I would love to rip out that carpet! When Noah was crawling I would steam it almost every week but really twice a month.

We have hardwood in the nursery.  We went to one of those carpet remnant stores and had a rug cut and they put a seem on it.  It's cheaper and nicer than an area rug.

I love hardwood and would cover our whole house in it if DH let me. I say do the hardwood and just get a rug for now. We have two dogs too and the hardwood portion of our house is so much easier to take care of with the hair and occasional mess. Plus, rugs can be replaced whenever they get worn or gross. Carpet can't always just be easily ripped up.

  • If you have hardwood everywhere get it, but buy an rug to cover almost the entire thing. Not a wool area rug, they can irritate sensitive skin. We have hardwood on the first floor and carpet on the second. Much easier on our knees when we are play trucks, firehouse and any other things with DS for hours. You need a large space to play and I doubt an area rug will be enough.

  • My Sister in Law had hardwood throughout her house and when her son was old enough to be playing in there with his trucks and things she bought those playtime tiles and covered his entire floor with them! It seemed perfect because it protected her floors from getting scratches and things from his toys and kept him safe from hard bumps on a hardwood floor and it was easy to clean! Maybe something to think about...you definitely couldn't put those tiles down on top of carpet.?
