The Tudors?

I'm a netflix addict...so I've just started watching The Tudors. Anyone else watch this show while it was on (I think it has ended now)?

Just looking for opinions on it-I can only watch so much That 70's Show reruns (thanks DH)

  • it was good for the entertainment value, but if you know the story of the Tudors, the historical innacuracies of the show might kill it for you (as it did me) but if that wouldn't bother you than yes, its good.

I also agree with the above, but I still think it was a great series and would've liked to see the story continue with his children.

That happened IRL, too.  After Anne Boleyn his life kind of got boring.  Except for Anne of Cleves.  She was all kinds of awesome.

I agree.  I watched all seasons just because I wanted to see it through but after he lops Anne's head off it just wasn't the same. Plus the timing got weird.  They took almost 2 seasons (I think) to tell the Anne Boleyn story and after that they really blitzed through the wives, like 2 a season, lol.

    Sadie is not impressed.

They did this because the actor (whatever the heck his name is!) didn't want to play Henry when he got old and fat, so they had to rush to finish the story. Lame.

And Sillypit: they took so many liberties with the story and it drove me nuts. But if I pretended like I didn't know anything then it was good for the entertainment value alone.

This. I couldn't stand watching it because I love English history.

  • I'm just in it for the entertainment value...not too concerned with it being historically accurate.

This is not DH's cup of tea, so this will have to be something I watch on my work from home days :)

  • I liked it.  Havne't seen the 5th season yet though.  But I gotta think Catherine Howard will keep it entertaining.

I also wished they'd continue with Jane Grey, and Queens Mary and Elizabeth.

Surviving? You mean getting divorced merely because he couldn't stand the sight/smell of her? That's gotta be brutal!

Hey, at least he didn't behead her.

And, from what I understand, she was the only one of his wives that he was actually friends with.  She was an advisor to him in his final years, especially when treading the murky waters of the newly burgeoning Lutheran faith and Puritanism.

  • I LOVED this series (historical inaccuracies and all) After the first 2 season covering the drama of Katherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn it's not as drama crazy but still really well done and interesting. I'm biased though and own all the seasons.

This is true, but he learned the error if his ways and realized he himself was not as hawt as he used to be and that looks weren't nearly as important.

And if we're going to rank wives by survival Katherine Parr seems to have won that one as she outlived him.

Yeah, but I don't think she was very happy after Henry.  She married that douche Thomas Seymore who spent their entire marriage trying to get into Elizabeth's pants so he could be King.

From what I read, she was totes in love with him and turned a blind eye to his philandering ways because of it. Naasty considering Elizabeth was all of what? 14/15?

That seemed to happen a lot back in Tudor/Elizabethan England.

Have you read the new Margaret George book? It's about the last 20 years of Elizabeth's reign and her (very strained) relationship with Lettice Knolleys.   It also goes into the Spanish Armada and all of the shenanigans between Elizabeth and the Earl of Essex.

    It's very very good.

I haven't read it yet. But I love Margaret George (her Mary Magdalene, Henry VIII and Helen of Troy were great). I'll look into it! Thanks.
