2nd Trimester

Charlie Horse diverted!

For the past 2 nights I have woken to the feeling of a charlie horse beginning. Somehow I was able to stop it from happening and they didn't happen! I streched my foot a certain way and was able to avoid them. If you are having this problem in the night, I hope you can figure out how to do this because it has saved me! Of course, that was only 2 nights! Who knows what could happen tonight.

Re: Charlie Horse diverted!

  • a charlie horse is your muscle contracting spontaneously. so, if it's in your calf, stretching that muscle out, like you would before working out, will help. for whatever muscle, though, it's the same idea. you want to stretch the muscle, to counteract the flexing action it's doing on its own.

  • I had my first one last week one night and it was so bad that I woke up crying, tears pouring down my face.  DH woke up and massed my calf until I felt a little better.  That was Thursday.  It was still sore to walk on yesterday afternoon.

  • I get those often in the middle of the night. I find that when I do get one I get out of bed and do some lunges until it goes away. Usually after about 10 seconds or so it'll go away. But dang they're so painful!

  • I should have written "averted"! DUH.

Yes, I streched it the proper way but did it just in time for the cramp not to set in!

  • Yay! I used to get a lot of charlie horses, too. But mine seemed to be caused by a calcium deficiency. Once I started drinking more milk, the cramps disappeared!
