Insurance Companies

Ok something was brought to my attention over the weekend that I really didn't think about. Anyone that is an insurance person or went through something similar, please respond.

I'm graduating in a couple of days with my RN and I'm planning on switching jobs as soon as possible but it was brought to my attention that an insurance company may not pick me up because I have a "pre-existing" condition (the pregnancy). I'm currently employed and have insurance that is top notch. My husband's company doesn't offer health insurance that is any good so that's why we're with mine....

just wondering what I should do. Should I hold out on getting the new position until my baby is born or am I safe to switch jobs. Help ladies!

Re: Insurance Companies

  • Pregnancy cannot be treated as a pre-existing condition. Will your new insurance start right away? If not, you might have to pay for appointments/care before it becomes effective, but they can't deny coverage due to pregnancy. If there would be a gap between when your current insurance ends and new one begins, consider doing COBRA with your old insurance until your new one is effective. COBRA can be expensive, so you would have to weigh the costs. Hope that helps!

From what I understand- Unless you're switching to private insurance (for instance I'm a nanny and pay for my own insurance through BCBS) the insurance co. HAS to cover you, as pregnancy can no longer be considered a pre-existing condition.
  • "Pre-existing" conditions do not apply when you are getting insurance through a large group, meaning an employer with 50+ employees.

  • We have BCBS as well and I was reading through our benefits last night and read the same as PP have mentioned...cannot be considered a pre-existing condition.
