WWYD: Sex and BC question

Sooo, this is kind of embarrassing but here we go.

DH is not very well endowed. He has trouble with most condoms and hates using one because sometimes we cannot finish because the condom will not stay on (other times he has NO problem).

Before DD, I was on the regular pill and that was all of the BC we used. It worked for over 2 years for us, and we didn't conceive DD until I went off of the pill. Now I EBF so I am on the mini pill, which I do not fully trust. I refuse to let him go without a condom, but using them is kind of killing our sex life. Sad

We're young and although we don't want more kids at this point, we can't be 100% sure we won't change our minds, so I don't want him to get snipped yet. But I won't stop EBFing until DD is ready...

Should I talk to my doc about something like Mirena? I'm afraid something like that wouldn't work for me... I originally went on BC for very heavy, irregular, painful periods. The pill regulated me, calmed my periods down and apparently did the trick as far as preventing pregnancy. I tried Seasonique for one three-month cycle and had my period for two months... so that didn't work. I'm afraid a non-hormonal would cause my period to be long, heavy, painful and irregular again.

Thoughts? I told DH I'd ask my doc about it but I know quite a few of you on here have experience and thought I'd ask before I call her.

  • Why don't you trust the mini pill?  What about spermicides?

I was told that the mini-pill wasn't as reliable because if you surpass a certain weight it is deemed completely unreliable. Also if you do not take it at the same same everyday it is not as effective either. Because of this I am BF'ing, using a condom, and using the mini pill.

I vote to try spermicides. Using it with the mini pill will probably work well. It's also pretty easy to use.

  • I think you would be fine going back on your regular BCP.  After my 6-week appointment, I started the same BCP I was on prior to conceiving DD (Ortho-Cyclin), and I have had zero issues with breastfeeding.  I've never had to supplement with formula, and my supply has been the exact same before and after going back on the pill.  In fact, my supply has increased since then, since DD is eating more now.  My dr asked me if I was having any supply issues, and when I said no, she didn't hesistate to prescribe my regular BCP.

All pills work like that. The mini pill is 99% effective when taking it at the same time and bf-ing a certain amount of times during the day.

This is why the regular pill worked so well for me, I think. I was insanely anal about taking it at the same time every day.

Unfortunately I'm not quite as good with the mini-pill - I often find myself nursing DD when I'm supposed to take it and DH isn't around to bring it to me. I am hoping to get back to my old habit as DD gets older but right now I'm a slacker. Sad

  • I have done the shot and it works well, also ask about Minera.   I have heavy periods that cause anemia, and my Dr. perscribed Minera to help control my period along with birth control.
  • I got Implanon and I'm EBF.  I still haven't had a PP period and one of the main side effects of Implanon is irregular bleeding.  With DS1, I got my first PP period at 9 months, so I'm guessing it will be the same this time.  I still have no sex drive, but that's not due to BC, it's because I'm BF.  I had the same problem after DS1.

  • You should be good with the Mirena.  I went on the pill at 15 for the same reason, horrible heavy painful periods.  I had Mirena after DS 1 and worked great, barely had a period, and if I did, it was really light and only a couple of days.  I would at least ask about it.

Thanks for this... maybe I will mention it to my doctor. It can't hurt to ask.

I didn't want to go on the mini pill because I was told it was 96% effective, and it is only that effective if you take it within 15 minutes everyday (my OB gave me a two hour window with other BCP). Anyway, I decided to take the chance with my milk supply and start taking regular birth control pills. My supply took a nose dive. I went from a supply that was pretty much good enough to absolutely nothing. I was only pumping 4 oz in a 24 hour period. I know it isn't this way for everyone, obviously, but just be careful with BCPs and your supply.

This is why I won't go on the regular pill... you never know what it will do. I have great supply, I pump more than enough for DD every day, have a great stash built up and nurse her as much as possible - I want to let her self-wean, so I want to keep my supply up.
