High blood pressure

I have been monitoring my bp since I had that scare at my NT scan and yesterday and today it's been pretty high. We went to breakfast and the to the grocery store this morning. I got about 1/2 way thru the store when I felt like I was going to pass out. I came home and checked and it's 155/90. I've been laying in bed since and it's come down a bit, but not much. My question is.. Can they give me blood pressure meds while pregnant? My urine was clean last week when I was at the dr. I of course am thinking the worst, pre e! What can/will they do for high bp while pregnant? I never had high bp before pregnancy.

Re: High blood pressure

  • I would call your OB. I didn't end up with pre-e, but had several bouts of high blood pressure and they had me monitor and I ended up in L&D once for monitoring when it was high.

  • Yes, they can give you BP meds while pregnant.  My SIL was on them during her pregnancies.  Call your OB tomorrow and get it checked. I learned with my first that the machines at the stores and even an at home cuff aren't really accurate, though, so don't let it terrify you yet!

  • Thanks ladies! I called and they want me to keep a log of my bp and bring it with me on Friday. I am to check it 4 times a day. Once sitting and then laying on my side for 15 minutes, doing that twice a day. If it's over 160/110 after laying down I am to call back. Hopefully it's nothing. I'm just so freaked out already, I didn't need any reason to add stress.

  • Yes. I had HBP while pregnant (but not pre-e) and was put on medication at 2 months. I was on the lowest dosage and it helped greatly.

You have to understand the risk of taking BP medication vs. the risks of what having HBP can do to not only your baby, but you, it is worth taking.

I had a perfectly normal, healthy, and full term pregnancy otherwise.

  • Just wanted to give you some reassurance. I also had HBP during pregnancy. They put me on meds to maintain it and induced me at 39 weeks because of it. I was on bedrest a little bit when it was on the high end, but once they figured out the right dosage, it came back down. I was on methyldopa and it's a very old BP med and very safe for pregnancy. Lily was born perfectly healthy. HTH!

story of my pregnancy from 6 weeks until I got hit with pre-e at 31 weeks. Pregnancy induced hypertension does give you a higher risk for pre-e but it does not guarentee it. They will moniter you closely. I was on bp meds during my pregnancy but unfortunately, I have had to continue them. The automatic cuffs and at home cuffs are not as accurate as a manual cuff as well.

  • I'm not help, but I did want to say you are in my thoughts and prayers that you can get it under control.  Hugs!

  • Thanks ladies! Those of you who had high blood pressure, what were your levels, if you don't mind me asking, before they decided to put you on meds?

I know I'm late in responding, but just wanted to also reassure you (like all the pp) that you can take bp meds while pregnant.  I had high bp before we started TTC and they switched me to a pregnancy-safe med once we started trying.  I was on it throughout my pregnancy and my bp was fine.

With me, my docs (MFM and regular) were more interested in if I was having effects from my pressures. IE: headaches, vision floaties, dizzyness, etc. At one point in my pregnancy, a pressure would be no big deal but towards the end, I was having symptoms at that pressure. I was hospitalized around 140/100.. I think.

It has a lot to do with your personal baseline. My norm was more like 120/80 or 120/75 where DH's baseline is more like 100/65. Me spiking to 130/90 is totally different than if he spiked that pressure. I hope I am explaining this okay..
