Our STTN fiasco

Last night DS slept for 7.5 hours. I would be excited, but I of course didn't get that much. I woke up a couple hours before that feeling pretty engorged. DS would grunt and move around a little so I thought he would get up soon so I just waited not realizing how much longer he would sleep. When he finally woke up at 4:15 this morning, I was anxous to nurse him and I think he was just as anxious as he quickly gulped down the milk. After about 15 minutes, he started falling back asleep and then pulled off, so I tried burping him like I normally do and went to put him on the other side. As soon as I layed him on the boppy to undo the other side, he shot a bunch of milk at me. I hurridly wiped it up, and cleaned up anything that got hit with the milk. DH was stumbling around to help not knowing what really happened. I told him I wasn't sure if he spit it up or just didn't swallow and debated now feeding him on the other side. Selfishly, I wanted to try at least a little to relieve some pressure. I then put him on and he nursed great for another 7-10 minutes and then pulled off again. I went to lay him down and as I did, milk started coming out of his nose which in turn made him gag a little. I picked him back up to held him upright to give it time to all go down before putting him back down again. Of course, I sat there watching him for a little bit to make sure he wasn't going to choke on any more milk. Once I finally fell asleep, I heard the fire alarm go off. It does this if someone leaves the door open to the bathroom while they take a shower, the steam seems to set the one off right outside the bathroom. This of course was DH getting ready for work. I'm starting to rethink letting him sleep, and setting my alarm again. haha Confused

Re: Our STTN fiasco

  • Oh wow that was a fiasco!!  Can you try pumping while your LO is asleep?

  • If he is going to start consistently STTN, you will want your body to get used to that. F you wake up uncomfortable, hand express enough to relieve the pressure. If you pump your body will keep making that milk even though DS doesn't need I anymore. Good luck! Itis uncomfortable at first, but your supply will adjust.

  • All I can say is that I'm jealous of your sleep.  :)
  • Ugh, that sounds like me.  Engorgement/ leakiness never lets me STTN, even if DD is making a go of it.  I find myself saying things like, "C'mon baby, wake up and help mom out!"  And if I let it go too long, the poor girl is basically trying to drink from a fire hose, and milk ends up everywhere!

My supply is regulating a bit already after a few nights of her sleeping longer... I wish it were for 7 hours like yours but at this point, even 4 hours is amazing Yes

  • I feel your pain. The first time DS slept 7 hours, I was in agony for the last hour of it. When I went to feed him on the second boob, milk shot out of my breast across the room. I was in shock just staring at the stream. It did get better though. I'm not as engorged in the morning, and I haven't had a repeat of the fire hose.
