Weekend parenting fails

I had a couple. Anyone care to join?

FAIL #1: C & I visited my mom at the beach. I took C to an ice cream shop to split a sundae (perhaps Fail #1a). He insisted on eating it with his hands, squishing between his fingers in between bites. I insisted he use a spoon. Giant tantrum ensued, followed by thrown out ice cream and quick removal of toddler to the car where he proceeded to cry and ask for "ice cream" the whole ride back. Later, I realized that the spoon had been in his left hand and he's right handed. So, he pretty much couldn't use it. Also, he's a toddler and expecting him to eat an amazing new treat with a utensil is probably asking too much.

FAIL #2: We were driving home and making excellent time until we hit traffic west of Easton. C did really, really well for the most part. Until we got to the Bay Bridge, when traffic actually started moving, and he started pitching a fit. I was determined to get home at that point (45 minutes away) and did everything I could to distract him. We finally get home and I pull him out of the car to find that he is basically sitting in a puddle. His diaper (which he was wearing for 4 hours, so not crazy long) was absolutely overflowing. His shorts were sopping wet. In my rush to get home in a timely manner, I let my kid sit in a swamp of his own pee. Go me.

Please tell me I'm not the only person who screwed their kid up for life this weekend?

Re: Weekend parenting fails

  • I got M an inflatable bathtub that looks like a duck. The main reason I got it is because it's portable and DH doesn't feel comfortable bathing him in the "big tub" yet, so I thought we could use it when we travel this summer. We put him in it last night and he totally freaked out and screamed like we were torturing him. After a couple of minutes, we took him out and put him back in his old tub, and he was fine after that. Poor kid is probably going to have nightmares about giant ducks and end up with a lifelong duck phobia.

  • J was being SUCH a pain yesterday. Whining, crying, being uncooperative. Ugh. I was chatting with my dad and complaining that J was being a crank and I didn't know why. My dad goes "Sounds like teething. That always makes them cranky. Is his nose running? Feverish?" Check, check, and check. And DUH.

I felt like such a jerk for a) not realizing that was the issue and b) being so annoyed at J's behavior. We gave him some motrin and rubbed his gums and he perked right up. (Um, after we had taken him out for a walk and he threw a tantrum that involved rolling around on the trash-strewn sidewalk.)

  • Here's my fail.  We went to 9 am mass yesterday and stopped by the playground at the church for not even 20 minutes afterwards.  DD got sunburned.  It was 10 a.m!  Uggh.

I don't think you can do permanent damage until their 12 and you give them a kiss in front of their friends.  :)

  • It wasn't this weekend, but I consider it a HUGE fail on my part.

Picked C up from daycare, put him in his carseat, put him in the car.  Drive home.  Get him out of the car and realize I didn't tighten his harness straps at all.

I work for the agency that regulates car seat safety, and I've been certified as a child passenger safety technician.  Ugh.

  • we drove to NYC this weekend. with my MIL, who often behaves as though she stopped getting smarter in the 9th grade. this is my excuse for anything that follows. ;)

fail #1: forgot to bring extra wipes, so i only had the ones in the small travel case in my purse. had to wipe her with course wipes for grown-ups, since that's all i had, until we could get to a store.

fail #2: DD is a new solid eater, and her BMs haven't regulated yet. she is still passing turds. she was screaming for the last hour of our trip up, and i realized when we got there that she had been sitting on a turd and it was really uncomfortable!

fail #3: it was cold in NYC, so on the way home, i put her in a footed sleeper. she slept for the first 90 minutes of the trip. the next 90 minutes, she was extremely unhappy. MIL didn't see fit to mention this, but when we stopped, DD was DRENCHED in sweat. hair soaking wet, completely drenched.

  • My child was whining... I mocked her by imitating her annoying whine sounds.
  • While I don't have anything to report for this weekend (though I am SURE I did something;)....I can so relate to the posts re:wet/dirty diapers on car rides.  So many times, I have said "she's fine, just fussy"...only to discover the poor kid was sitting in poop and/or pee.

Actually, I read in some parenting book that it's a good idea to do that b/c the child does not know what she sounds like and by mimicking her, you are letting her know how she really sounds and it may actually work at stopping the whining.

(someone else read this, too, right?)

  • So DS is in that mimicing everything you say phase, but he doesn't always associate it or remember it later.  Add to that I have a really bad habbit of saying "oh damn" never really realized how much until now...  So what is the one thing that DS has decided to pick up on this weekend and sort of say, yeah, "oh damn"!  He doesn't say it all the time but there were definitely times this weekend where I am pretty sure that is what he is saying.  DH is so mad at me, lol!  I knew this day would come and I have been trying to be so much better about my potty mouth. Embarrassed
  • Oh I have a major fail.  My 11 month old wears glasses for aphakia (lenses removed due to cataracts at birth.)  In other words, he can't see a thing without them.  He somehow got them off of his head and threw them out of the stroller in the middle of Reston Town Center in the middle of their Fine Arts Festival.  The worst part was, we didn't notice right away.  Thank goodness for kind strangers and the fact that Reston Town Center has a Lost and Found.  They have been recovered but not after feeling like the worst mom ever for not noticing. :-/

  • DD got the lid off the bubbles container and proceeded to drink it. In her attempt to spit it out- she started bubbling at the mouth. It made me laugh and that was so not nice.

We have that bath tub too. We just got it recently and it's worked out fine.

    Sorry M doesn't like his.

My fail this weekend is DS cried for a good 45-60 minutes Sat and Sun night when we put him to bed. Usually he is down after 10-15 mins of crying, and has actually been nursing to sleep a lot more frequently. It sucked leaving with our sitter Sat night when he was still crying himself to sleep.

He's getting a new tooth in so I hope that the tooth is a culprit and he goes back to normal. Otherwise we're referberizing I guess.

You guys are awesome.... as i freak out more and more as the whole 'having a baby' gets closer, it's nice to know that other moms go through some hiccups on the road and that both baby and mom make it through - the nightmares of 'bad parenting' have already started in my head and i keep reading books as if that's going to magically make me the super parent (my only response to incertitude is to 'study' - bloody hell, i was a student for way too long!).
