Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone notice hand preference yet?

So, I've noticed that D mostly uses his left hand - reaches for toys with his left, eats with his left, etc. DH's parents were up Saturday and noticed it as well before DH said anything about it. I'm thinking it's way too early to actually know if he'll be right or left-handed.

It was interesting because my MIL said my DH preferred his left hand as a baby/toddler until he went to preschool. She thinks that he's now right-handed because he saw all the other kids writing with their right hands and he "caved to peer pressure." LOL. DH also bats and golfs left-handed, because that is what feels most natural. Interesting, huh?

  • DH thinks that DD will be left handed.  She does seem to use that hand more, but I also agree that it's too early to really determine anything.

But we often "argue" as to whether their hand preference is determined before birth, or if it just develops as they learn to do things.  Thoughts?

That is interesting. My FIL is actually left handed, but they forced him to learn to write with his right hand in school. He is pretty bitter about it. I think its kind of funny when he goes off about it (if it comes up in conversation, not just randomly cuz that would be weird).

Heath uses his right hand for most things. He definitely seems to prefer it now, but I think you are right and its probably too early to really tell.

    Nothing to see here! :)
  • I can't remember, but I think they tell you it really doesn't become obvious until age 3 years.  I am kind- of like your hubby.  I shoot pool left handed and as a kid I skateboarded left footed. I sucked at pool and skateboarding though, so maybe if I practiced on the right side I would have beed better, who knows.
  • DD only eats cheerios with her L hand!

  • DD prefers her left.  I think DH was supposed to be left handed.  He uses both hands for sports but prefers left for some things - he boxes like a lefty.

DH had learning issues - reading, writing, speaking - which I think may have stemmed from using his right hand instead of his left for writing.

  • A reaches for toys mostly with his right hand, but he does use his left sometimes. I'd say it's about 60/40 (R/L) with what hand he uses. I'm pretty sure he'll be right handed.

  • I keep trying to notice if I can see if she prefers one hand over the other but she uses them pretty evenly right now.

DD#1 is for sure a right handed girl.

  • I've read it is too early to know what hand they will use to write.  I hope Oliver is left handed like the other two kids and myself.  I use my left hand to write and eat, and my right hand for everything else.  The twins do the same thing.

  • That is interesting, I wonder if that will change as he gets older like it did for your DH. My LO likes to poke at things with his thumb and he will only do this with his right hand but it seems like he always has to be moving his left hand around.

  • DS much prefers his left hand, DH and I are both right handed.
  • DS take objects you hand to him like spoons, a toy, etc. with his right hand or both hands together, but if he is trying to make a toy work (like a jack in the box or a push button pop up toy) he will primarily use his left hand. Go figure. I think it's too early to tell right now.

  • J definitely prefers her left hand. If I notice it more and more the older she gets we'll definitely encourage that. Left handed batting is where it's at.

  • Lainey did the same thing for awhile where she preferred her left, now she's switched to her right.  I read they switch back and forth until about age 2 they develop a true preference.

  • DD is left handed and has always favored her left hand. I think DS might be following suit.

I do almost everything but write left handed, I was taught to use my right hand.
